WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!. After Koum and Acton left Yahoo! in September 2007, the duo traveled to South America to take a break from work. At one point, they applied for jobs at Facebook but were rejected. WhatsApp is going to go completely free, dropping its annual subscription fee. The Facebook-owned chat app will instead look to make money by letting companies talk to people in messages. WhatsApp charges $0.99, or roughly the same in pence, after the first year. But it will drop that charge and go completely free. WhatsApp is a messaging app that lets users text, chat, and share media, including voice messages and video, with individuals or groups. WhatsApp relies on data to send messages, like iMessage or BBM, so it doesn't cut into your monthly text allotment. WhatsApp is a free to download messenger app for smartphones. WhatsApp uses the internet to send messages, images, audio or video. The service is very similar to text messaging services, however, because WhatsApp uses the internet to send messages, the cost of using WhatsApp is significantly less than texting.
