Dollar cost averaging is the most sensible way to go. Making regular and consistent purchases  ensures that the price fluctuations are filtered out. 

I've been buying bitcoin and SP irrespective of price. Why? Well what is the benefit in holding dollars? For the same reason I regularly purchase metals and have been happy with that approach. The recent pullback in the crypto prices is, as you suggest, a gift.
