Strolling through the *Steam* store I came across a title I hadn't heard of for several years: *Counter-Strike* (Specifically *Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012).* I wasn't expecting much but I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. Although, I have to clarify, what prompted me to play *CS* once again was largely the nostalgic factor.

Paseándome por la tienda de *Steam* me topé con un título del cual no oía hace varios años: *Counter-Strike* (Concretamente *Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012).* No me esperaba mucho pero debo decir que quedé gratamente sorprendido con la experiencia. Let me explain: *Counter-Strike,* the original, was the first FPS I played and also my first *online* and/or *LAN* multiplayer; long before I had the slightest idea of what a *shooter* or any of the jargon related to *gaming* was.* In those years it was already hovering around version 1. 6 (which would be the last one), and as my mother worked in a *"cyber",* that place where people paid to be able to use a computer for a certain period (something that now would seem dystopian), I spent between six and eight hours a day playing almost exclusively *CS.* Of course with the time I left it, although I played sporadically *CS: Condition Zero* and *CS: Source,* but none ever reached the *magic* of *CS 1.6.* Until now.

It seems that *Counter-Strike: Global Offensive* is the final success of a *Valve,* developer company, which could not replicate the success of the *CS* of yesteryear. It knew how to take the best of its previous versions, except *Condition Zero*, since it has nothing good, and bring it to a visual and graphic section that, despite having nothing "special", is quite decent and very well optimized. So, after about a decade, I returned not only to *CS* but to one of its most iconic maps: *Dust II.*

In architecture it's the same *Dust II* as always which I loved. The gameplay is also just as I remembered it, except for a couple of tweaks in the shopping menu and inventory of the avatar you control. After several rounds I realized how rusty I was, but I fought back as best I could and found the *Tec-9* to be a great ally.

Tal parece que *Counter-Strike: Global Offensive* es el acierto final de una *Valve,* compañía desarrolladora, que no podía replicar el éxito del *CS* de antaño. Supo tomar lo mejor de sus versiones anteriores, excepto *Condition Zero*, ya que no tiene nada bueno, y llevarlo a un apartado visual y gráfico que, a pesar de que no tiene nada "especial", está bastante decente y muy bien optimizado. Así, después alrededor de una década, volví no solo a *CS* sino a uno de sus más emblemáticos mapas: *Dust II.*

En arquitectura es el mismo *Dust II* de siempre lo cual me encantó. El sistema de juego también es tal como lo recordaba, a excepción de un par de retoques en el menú de compras e inventario del avatar que uno controla. Luego de varias rondas comrpobé cuan oxidado estaba, pero me defendí como pude y encontré en la *Tec-9* un gran aliado.

I tested as many weapons as I could, which leads me to highlight a great point in favor of this *CS:* all weapons, at least right off the bat, are useful. I did not notice big differences, beyond that some are better for close or distant combat than others. Something healthy for the competitiveness of the game.

Probé tantas armas como pude, lo que me lleva a resaltar un gran punto a favor de este *CS:* todas las armas, al menos de buenas a primeras, son útiles. No noté grandes diferencias, más allá de que algunas son mejores para combate cercano o lejano que otras. Algo sano para la competitividad del mismo.

And speaking of that; after several hours of fine tuning my aim I began to notice the *casual* mode a bit easy. So I ventured into the competitive mode, where the games are five against five and the difficulty level is infinitely higher. It was almost like learning to play again and I checked how low my level is; however, I was able to save the game a couple of times, defused the bomb and killed an enemy with the AWP (sniper rifle) without using the scope.

Y hablando de eso; después de varias horas afinando mi puntería comencé a notar el modo *casual* un tanto fácil. Por lo que me aventuré al modo competitivo, donde las partidas son de cinco contra cinco y el nivel de dificultad es infinitamente superior. Fue casi como aprender a jugar otra vez y comprobé lo bajo que está mi nivel; no obstante me quedo con que pude salvar la partida un par de veces, desactivé la bomba y maté a un enemigo con el AWP (rifle de francotirador) sin usar la mira.

I'm glad to see that a game that marked my beginnings in gaming, and those of a whole generation, (most probably more than one) continues reinventing itself and maintaining a certain level of quality. Especially taking into account that this version of *CS* is a decade old. In an industry that updates as fast as the videogame industry, this is something worth noting. I'll keep playing it, of course, although I don't know to what extent. For the time being I'll keep the good things about this game, and I brag about the achievements I unlocked in an afternoon.
