Desde muy joven participé en las protestas estudiantiles  que se produjeron en Venezuela  a finales de la década de los 60 y hasta mediados de la década de los setenta.  El partido blanco y el verde se turnaban en el poder pero sus políticas  y programas si bien contribuyeron a mantener un importante período de ejercicio democrático y de impulso a la modernización del país, siempre estuvieron en deuda con los postulados de la Constitución en materia  del  desarrollo educativo y social.

Fui objeto de medidas disciplinarias  con expulsión  del liceo José Silverio González (Cumaná) y mi nombre y el de otros compañeros de mi  liceo, engrosaron la lista negra de otros planteles, para que no nos dieran inscripción en ningún liceo público del Estado Sucre, el año lectivo 69/70. Las protestas  promovidas por la Federación de Centros Universitarios  se protagonizaron en casi todo el país.  El gobierno promovió el plan de pacificación para  terminar  la lucha armada, pero las protestas estudiantiles continuaron  ante los anuncios de las reformas educativas, especialmente lo relativo a la eliminación de las escuelas técnicas. No solo los estudiantes que protestamos fuimos objeto de suspensión por un año;  también algunos docentes  fueron removidos de sus planteles con la figura del traslado.     

El objeto de este escrito no es hacer un análisis de aquella época que ya es historia conocida. La referencia vale como preámbulo o  contexto de mi historia, para responder la iniciativa de @charjaim que me ha inspirado a compartir esta parte de mi vida personal. 

Uno de mis profesores fue trasladado a Maturín donde residía su esposa con su pequeña hija.  Juan José fue mi profesor de Castellano  en segundo año, gran poeta  y humorista. Al saber de mi situación fue a mi casa a hablar con mi madre y le solicitó que le diera la responsabilidad de representarme para llevarme a  Maturín.  Mi madre aceptó porque no tenía cómo pagarme estudios en un plantel privado de Cumaná. 

Así  me fui de mi casa materna. Dado mi carácter impulsivo, por mucho tiempo mi madre y mi tía, esperaban que regresara con el rabo entre las piernas en cualquier momento.  Me fui a vivir con otra familia completamente desconocida, pero desde el primer día, mi vida cambió radicalmente porque comencé a ser responsable de mí mismo, sabía que de eso dependía mi éxito o mi fracaso, y era necesario tener éxito en la empresa para corresponder a la confianza de aquella gente, que también eran unos extraños en la ciudad,  porque eran oriundos del sur de Guárico, de los llanos de  Guayabal cerca de San Fernando de Apure. 

Mi inscripción en el liceo para cursar el  4to año fue condicionada por el Director  del Liceo Miguel José Sanz de esta forma: 

-Aquí puedes hacer muchas cosas además de estudiar, menos política, la política está prohibida para ti, y debes hacerlo por tu bien y por el bien de tu representante; puedes contar conmigo para lo que sea, si necesitas algo que no te pueda dar el profesor ven a mi oficina o  a mi casa, ¿Está claro?. Dijo con aspereza el Profesor Peña. 

Esas palabras me parecieron terribles e inaceptables pero no hubo acta de compromiso para firmar.

-Está muy claro Director, haré todo lo posible, yo solo quiero graduarme y viajar a Caracas-respondí resignado. 

-Puedes volver a Cumaná el próximo año y te gradúas allá en tu liceo-dijo el Director

-No Director, me graduaré de bachiller aquí en Maturín, luego iré a Caracas a estudiar  Derecho y regresaré como abogado a  Cumaná- Le respondí.

-Muy bien, entonces cuenta conmigo, aquí te apoyaremos- dijo dándome palmadas en los hombros mientras me acompañaba al pasillo- Yo también soy abogado, además de profesor; estoy a la orden.

Mi llegada fue antecedida por la noticia de que un nuevo estudiante venía desde Cumaná a cumplir un año de suspensión.  En vez de rechazo o indiferencia, lo que encontré por todas partes fue solidaridad tanto de los que se identificaban con el nuevo gobierno como de los del gobierno anterior y los “guerrilleros”.  El primer mes ya era miembro del orfeón y  me adueñé  de una vieja cartelera del piso 1 en la cual publicaba casi a diario mis caricaturas y escritos.   

La solidaridad de la que hablo no es en términos de la política, o la identificación con alguien que ha sido sancionado por sus ideales.  Yo encontré el calor y el aprecio, el apoyo y el respeto, la compañía  de adultos y jóvenes y en pocas semanas me movía en el liceo como si estuviera allí desde el primer año.  Esta experiencia me permitió pensar de otra forma con relación a la sociedad, los dogmas y las ideologías.  Tenía otra visión del mundo y  en este ambiente se abrieron  varias compuertas.  La actitud y la confianza que me brindaron mis compañeros y profesores  contribuyeron a consolidar y profundizar mis convicciones  y las razones de luchar por el bienestar de los demás, sin atesorar resentimientos contra nadie. 

Viví con la familia del profesor Juan José durante ese año escolar;  su esposa era maestra en una escuela nacional  y mientras  ellos estaban en sus  trabajos, la hermana de ella  y yo cuidábamos  la niña Odalinda.  Una que otra tarde también yo me ocupaba del cuidado del patio y el jardín, entre otras tareas domésticas que tuve que aprender, como hacer las compras o pagar los servicios. Éramos una familia.  Conversábamos en las comidas, y se interesaban por mis escritos y dibujos y nunca cesaron de aconsejarme: Yo sentía que era el hijo mayor de la casa.  Algunos de mis profesores, directivos o coordinadores, me comentaban los contenidos de la cartelera, hacían críticas y daban consejos de cómo mejorarla, pero en el fondo, sentía que muchas de las recomendaciones y consejos era para mejorarme a mí y no a la cartelera. 
 
Al finalizar ese año escolar, llegó la inesperada noticia: Juan y su esposa eran trasladados nuevamente,  esta vez  al estado Aragua. Juan ofreció llevarme para que continuara el quinto año en Turmero o Maracay. Pero en el transcurso del año en Maturín surgieron muchas lazos de amistades y compromisos. Una de mis compañeras era hija del Presidente de la Asamblea Legislativa y de URD, el  Dr. Pérez, quien era el que estaba pendiente de mi salud y me suministraba los medicamentos.  Cuando él supo lo del cambio para Aragua, me dijo “yo puedo conseguirte residencia para que te quedes, al profesor  lo tienen fichado”. Entonces hablé con el Director sobre la situación y me dijo  que podía ayudarme a conseguir casa  y familia y yo le dije que estaba de acuerdo pero que no quería compromisos  con su partido.  Ese año aprobé el curso con el segundo mejor promedio del liceo, fue mi carta aval  para obtener el apoyo de la institución.

 El Director se ocupó de conseguirme habitación y el Presidente de la Asamblea  me otorgó una beca y su esposa asumió mi representación.  La Sociedad de Padres y Representantes también me otorgó una beca de útiles escolares y uniformes. Ahora estaba solo por mi cuenta pero no me sentía solo, tenía  novia y almorzaba algunos días en su casa, con su familia,  y en la tarde  estudiábamos en la casa de mi amiga Rosita Pérez, hija del médico parlamentario.

En mi  último año en Maturín viví  en casa de Salomé,  representante de una de mis compañeras de clases.  Una vez le pregunté quién pagaba la habitación: “varias personas pagan, gente que no quiere que se sepan sus nombres”.  Desde que entré a esa humilde casa, me dediqué a arreglarla con mis conocimientos elementales de electricidad y plomería: algunos fines de semana los dedicaba a asear y arreglar la casa, pronto hice amistades en la vereda del barrio y conseguí,  a través del Presidente de la Asamblea,  la pintura necesaria para pintar todas las fachadas de mi vereda;  me sobró solidaridad y apoyo del vecindario para esa jornada. Fue una experiencia muy rica que contribuyó con mi crecimiento y madurez no solo como hombre sino también como ciudadano y vecino consustanciado con la problemática y las necesidades de la comunidad. 

Hoy veo con nostalgia y preocupación  estos tiempos comparados con los que viví aquellos años. La indolencia es ausencia de bondad.  Estoy convencido de  que gracias a la bondad de tanta gente que me apoyó pude sobrevivir y lograr superar  exitosamente esa dura etapa del destierro y la separación de mi familia natural.   Recuerdo que cuando me despedí del profesor Juan José le dije que no tenía  ni sabía cómo agradecerle lo que había hecho por mí durante un año y él me dijo:  

-Es muy fácil, haz por otros lo que yo hice por ti, así cambiaremos el mundo.

Finalmente, al terminar mi quinto año, obtuve uno de los  promedios más altos del estado Monagas  y por esa razón me renovaron  con un incremento la beca para seguir estudios universitarios; decidí seguir la profesión de mi gran amigo y educador, mi profesor de castellano Juan José Navas, el poeta Savan.

De este modo puedo afirmar que he sido afortunado por recibir actos de bondad, gestos solidarios, y manifestaciones de apoyo desinteresado desde temprana edad. Han sido valores característicos en mi vida, desde entonces, para mis alumnos y mis amigos.

From a very young age, I participated in the student protests that took place in Venezuela at the end of the 1960s and until the mid-1970s.  The White and Green parties took turns in power, but their policies and programs, although they contributed to maintain an important period of democratic exercise and to promote the modernization of the country, were always in debt with the postulates of the Constitution in terms of educational and social development.

I was subject to disciplinary measures with expulsion from the José Silverio González High School (Cumaná) and my name and that of other classmates from my high school, were added to the black list of other schools, so that we would not be enrolled in any public high school in the State of Sucre, during the 69/70 school year. The protests promoted by the Federation of University Centers took place almost all over the country.  The government promoted the pacification plan to end the armed struggle, but the student protests continued in the face of the announcements of the educational reforms, especially those related to the elimination of the technical schools. Not only the students who protested were suspended for a year, but also some teachers were removed from their schools by means of a transfer.     

The purpose of this article is not to analyze that period, which is already known history. The reference serves as a preamble or context of my story, to respond to @charjaim's initiative that has inspired me to share this part of my personal life. 

One of my teachers was transferred to Maturín where his wife lived with their young daughter.  Juan José was my second year Spanish teacher, poet and humorist. When he heard about my situation he went to my house to talk to my mother and asked her to give him the responsibility of representing me to take me to Maturín.  My mother accepted because she could not afford to pay for my studies in a private school in Cumaná. 

So I left my mother's house. Given my impulsive character, for a long time my mother and my aunt expected me to return with my tail between my legs at any moment.  I went to live with another completely unknown family, but from the first day, my life changed radically because I began to be responsible for myself, I knew that my success or failure depended on that, and it was necessary to succeed in the company to correspond to the trust of those people, who were also strangers in the city, because they were natives of southern Guárico, from the plains of Guayabal near San Fernando de Apure. 

My enrollment in the high school for the 4th year was conditioned by the Director of the Liceo Miguel José Sanz in this way: 

-Here you can do many things besides studying, except politics, politics is forbidden for you, and you must do it for your good and for the good of your representative; you can count on me for whatever, if you need something that the teacher cannot give you come to my office or to my house, is that clear?. He said with asperity. 

Those words seemed terrible and unacceptable to me but there was no commitment act to sign.

-It is very clear Director, I will do everything possible, I just want to graduate and travel to Caracas," I answered.  

-You can go back to Cumana next year and graduate from your high school there," he said. 

-No Director, I will graduate from high school here in Maturín, then I will go to Caracas to study law and return to Cumaná as a lawyer," I answered him.

-Very well, then count on me, we will support you here," he said patting me on the shoulders as he accompanied me to the hallway, "I am also a lawyer, as well as a professor, I am at your service.

My arrival was preceded by the fame of a new student coming from Cumaná to serve a year of suspension.  Instead of rejection or indifference, what I found everywhere was solidarity from those who identified with the new government as well as from those of the previous government and the "guerrillas".  The first month I was already a member of the orfeón and I took over an old billboard on the first floor on which I published my cartoons and writings almost daily.   

The solidarity I speak of is not in terms of politics, or identification with someone who has been sanctioned for his ideals.  I found warmth and appreciation, support and respect, the company of adults and young people and in a few weeks I was moving around the high school as if I had been there since the first year.  This experience allowed me to think differently in relation to society, dogmas and ideologies.  I had another vision of the world and in this environment several floodgates opened.  The attitude and the confidence that my classmates and professors gave me contributed to consolidate and deepen my convictions and the reasons to fight for the welfare of others. 

I lived with Professor Juan José's family during that school year; his wife was a school teacher and while they were at work, her sister and I took care of the child.  Once in a while I also took care of the yard and garden, among other household chores I had to learn, such as shopping and paying the utilities. We were a family.  We talked at meals, and they were interested in my writings and drawings and never stopped advising me: I felt that I was the eldest son of the house.  Some of my teachers, directors or coordinators would comment on the contents of the bulletin board, criticize it and give advice on how to improve it, but deep down, I felt that many of the recommendations and advice were to improve me and not the bulletin board. 
 
At the end of that school year, the unexpected news arrived: Juan and his wife were being transferred again, this time to Aragua state. Juan offered to take me to continue my fifth year in Turmero or Maracay. But during the course of the year in Maturín many friendships and commitments arose. One of my classmates was the daughter of the President of the Legislative Assembly and of URD, Dr. Perez, who was the one who took care of my health and supplied me with medicines.  When he found out about the change to Aragua, he told me "I can get you a residence so that you can stay, they have the professor on file". Then I talked to the Director about the situation and he told me that he could help me get another house and family and I told him that I agreed but that I did not want commitments with his party.  That year I passed the course with the second best average of the high school, it was my letter of endorsement to get the support of the institution.

 The Director arranged for my residence and the President of the Assembly gave me a scholarship.  The Parents and Representatives Society also gave me a scholarship for school supplies and uniforms. Now I was on my own but I did not feel lonely, I had a girlfriend and had lunch some days at her house, with her family, and in the afternoon we studied at the house of my friend Rosita Perez, daughter of the parliamentary doctor.

In my last year in Maturín I lived at Salomé's house, the representative of one of my classmates.  Once I asked her who paid for the room: "several people pay, people who love you but don't want you to know their names".  Since I entered that humble house, I dedicated myself to fix it with my elementary knowledge of electricity and plumbing: some weekends were dedicated to fix the house, soon I made friends in the neighborhood sidewalk and I got, through the President of the Assembly, the necessary paint to paint all the facades of my sidewalk; I had plenty of solidarity and support from the neighborhood for that journey. It was a very rich experience that contributed to my growth and maturity not only as a man, but also as a citizen and a neighbor who is aware of the problems and needs of the community. 

Today I see with nostalgia and concern these times compared to those I lived in those years, indolence is the absence of kindness.  I am convinced that thanks to the kindness of so many people who supported me I was able to survive and successfully overcome that hard stage of exile and separation from my natural family.   I remember that when I said goodbye to Professor Juan José, I told him that I did not know how to thank him for what he had done for me during a year and he told me: "It is very easy, do for others:  

-It is very easy, do for others what I did for you, that way we will change the world.

Finally, when I finished my fifth year, I obtained one of the highest averages in the state of Monagas and for that reason they renewed my scholarship with an increase to continue my university studies; I decided to follow the profession of my great friend and protector, my Spanish teacher Juan José Navas, the poet Savan.

In this way I can affirm that I have been fortunate to receive acts of kindness, gestures of solidarity, and manifestations of disinterested support from an early age. They have been characteristic values in my life ever since.
