This weeks installment of the Origin of Expression Series is the expression Bringing Home the Bacon. 

From my understanding it started in North America, so I'm wondering if it's common worldwide, but it's always interesting to hear from everyone if it is.

Bringing home the bacon is used to refer to someone earning a living or having success.

You would say it if someone earns a good wage and supports there family.

The fun story and one I was familiar with was that is started in reference to the old game during county fairs  when people would compete to catch a greased pig, then the winner would keep the pig to be taken home for food. Hence bringing home the bacon to feed the family.

The second origin theory revolves around a tradition in some fifteenth century towns in England when newlywed or married couples would compete at an event hosted by the church and if they could prove they lived in harmony they would win some bacon from the church.

The third origin story is actually the documented one, it was used in 1906, when a boxer's mom sent a telegraph that was read by the announcer and published in the paper. It stated something along the lines of "win then fight then bring back the bacon." Turns out after that usage it gained huge popularity in the media and became commonly used in North America.
