Discrimination Has Its Place
I recently saw a sign outside a restaurant that said: 
β€œNo Strollers. No High Chairs. No Booster Chairs. Children crying or making loud noises are a distraction to other diners, and as such are not allowed in the dining room.”

Some will cry "discrimination" over this restaurant's policy. Others are surely thinking "It's about time!" As for me, I believe all businesses "reserve the right" to serve or not serve a potential customer. The flexibility afforded by self-determination allows businesses to determine what practices work best and the overall public is better served as a result. Another restaurant could use this opportunity to push its "Family Friendly Atmosphere." The results of niche developments are net gains for businesses and consumers.

Usually if a selective organization is formed, another organization will crop up to capture other demographics, if not all those not included by the initial organization. There are exceptions of course; there's no National Organization of Men, National Association for Advancement of White People, Natural-Born American Citizen Anti-Defamation League, or Women's National Football League.


I see a policy that allows judgements by staff based on behavior to just be an invitation for arguments and negative reviews. Just as I accept I can't play a round of golf without a collared shirt, those with children should accept that no place "has" to allow them.

The thing is, everyone discriminates all the time. The difference is that, as individuals, we call it "Making choices." If the government wants true diversity and opportunity, shouldn't it require people to shop at EVERY store, trying EVERY food? Just as it wouldn't be right to do that, it shouldn't require a business to serve EVERY person.

PS. If my kid starts being too noisy or making a scene in public, I get him out of there pronto. I wouldn't want to be subjected to that, and I won't subject others to it either.

I don't think it is totally unreasonable.  I think there is a fine line though and most people can not see the difference.  I really don't blame the restaurant as much as I blame the parents for putting the establishment in the position that they need to post that.  It's unbelievable to me some of the situations that parents think it is okay to place their children in.

I agree with you totally on this.When my kids were younger they learned to respect others and behave. I wish other parents would understand and not just thinking about their bubble, I dodge family friendly establishments as I want to enjoy myself without kids running around unsupervised.

Yeah I personally agree with the no kid discrimination in restaurants lol. I was once at dinner and a kid at the table next to us was watching cartoons on his iPad. I didn't mind that so much because whatever, it's not my place to judge others on raising their kids. I did however mind the fact that instead of using head phones the kid was listening to the iPad with the volume on full blast to the point where I couldn't carry on a conversation with my spouse across the table. I'm a non confrontational person so I didn't say anything to the parents at the other table. But it's just so inconsiderate. To me it's kind of like saying "hey it seems that you're ok with that blaring iPad, well I'm ok with swearing so I'm going to carry on a loud conversation that your kids are going to hear and make every other word a swear word." Hahaha Let's make this dinner miserable for everyone. "Fuck, fucketty fuck fuck." And so on for the rest of the evening.

I didn't do that but I imagined myself doing it ahahaha.

That signs if pretty funny. I bet they get mixed opinions on that one. I agree though for the most part. I dont mind when kids are well behaved. But when they are screaming and all that - no thank you.

You sound like you have a very rare skill of seeing different and nuanced perspectives of an issue. Your point is very well thought out. USA is founded on freedom of people to do what they want. If a business doesn’t want to serve someone for any reason they should be allowed to. 

Economics makes this even more clear cut. Anyone can serve or not serve who they want. If they disallow too many people it may hurt business. (Or help business by streamlining the clientele base) I think we agree that too much government intervention is almost always a bad thing. 
I also have a young child so I can really relate to your last point as well. There’s nothing worse than wanting some quiet time and having to hear someone else’s baby make a scene.
