<h2>Preface</h2>
<p>With disasters like Irma and Harvey which have destroyed homes and cities, plunging whole nations and countries into the dark, we should be prepared to face such disasters. With scientist already warning us that every natural disaster, like cyclones and tornadoes, is going to become fiercer and fiercer in trying to bring the planet back into equilibrium, we should be having the required tools at our disposal.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Mystifying Gravity</h2>
<p>Gravity is one of the most amazing forces of nature. When we jump or lift something, we are overcoming gravity. We have the power to defy gravity on an everyday basis without realizing it. Yet it is powerful enough to hold the moon to the earth. It is powerful enough to cause nuclear fusion inside the sun. It is powerful enough to hold the solar system together. We are so busy that we are not able to appreciate the nature of gravity as being the only force embedded directly into space time. We have associated it with the creation of the life directly by attracting particles together to create stars, planets, satellites and so much more.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Today it is giving us the ability to even power our home with light and an electrical source to power a radio for free forever. During a major crisis where there is no grid power or bad weather reducing the efficiency of solar power, a person need only 2 things; light to be able to move around in the dark and a radio to listen to the news if ever some help or some more calamities are coming.</p>
<h2>The current alternative?</h2>
<p>Some would say that we can use batteries but they have 3 major disadvantages. In a crisis that runs for a long time, you will need tons of those batteries and secondly, it costs to have it and is easily spoilt by water. Can we have another solution that does not have any disadvantage? Obviously it is not possible to have a product without disadvantage but what if we had something that approaches that perfection.</p>
<h2>The components</h2>
<p>I have got my hands on a prototype of GravityLight when I first heard about it in 2016. Immediately I went on Ebay to search for one which I luckily got from a guy in the UK. The shipping cost was twice the price of the product itself but it didn’t matter.</p>

<p>Above you have all the components that are shipped together to setup the system. There are 6 in total.</p>

<p>On the front side of the main device itself there is the led light and 3 intensity settings above it. You can choose the brightness with III (far most right) being the brightest.</p>

<p>On the back side, you can see that in the notice it is written prototype and to be expect some malfunctioning. There is pretty much nothing except for the bottom part where the middle hole is a jack to help you plug your radio. You plug in the green socket into that hole as shown below.</p>

<p>You then connect the bare positive and negative wires into the jack and ready for use. You can plug in anything that requires a maximum of 0.085W. You can even charge a phone but it will take a much longer time. But still it is better than nothing during a disaster.</p>
<h2>The demo</h2>
<p>GravityLight has been designed to take advantage of the nature of gravity to give us electricity. It consists of 2 weights (one small and 1 big) in a pulley system which turns a dynamo to give us the ability to generate light and to listen to a radio.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This weekend, I went to one of the darkest beaches of Mauritius and made the video below on how to setup GravityLight and show you how it works.</p>

<h2>GravityLight - The company (Deciwatt)</h2>
<p><a href="https://gravitylight.org/journey-so-far">Designed by Jim and Martin</a> in 2009 and focused their energy in bringing the technology to Kenya as a large scale pilot through crowdfunding and donations. They are continuing their quest to solve the energy crisis in poor countries by providing students the opportunity to study well at night.</p>
<p>What I got is a prototype and the setting up might look a bit complex but luckily it is being made available commercially by Deciwatt for the price of $80 on <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M7SM0KE">Amazon</a> and <a href="http://deciwatt.global/where-to-buy">BestBuy</a>. The quality of the material used and the setup is much easier as you can read more on this link and the look and feel is very different to the one I used in the demo.</p>

The commercial product allows for scalability by being able to add more components together to give decent lighting! Need to check the company's full specs to see how this one works.

I've seen gravitylight before, and it's super cool (your video was excellent, btw), I tend to think it's most useful for long term use in regions without reliable power grids to start with. Flashlights, lanterns, even candles are probably more useful if you just undergo the occasional natural disaster- though it's by no means a bad solution. Certainly much more environmentally friendly than batteries!

Thanks but the video was a bit dark...

The company behind GravityLight have the same philosophy that you have described. They run in countries with no grid electricity.

There are alternatives but a candle can catch fire and kerosene releases huge amount of carbon monoxide which are dangerous. If ever they are able to make simpler design or installation easier, I think I will power my home with it XD
