##
Why We Won't Ever Run out of New Music
------- Some people would be surprised that iTunes has over 28 million songs. At an average of 3:00 per song we're looking at 58333.33333333 days, or 159 years. Not to mention that is just iTunes alone. iTunes: 28 million different songs. last.fm: 45 million different songs. gracenote database: 130 million different songs. If you were to listen to each song back to back on gracenote, it would take over 1200 years to complete. There are only 12 tones in western music, similar combinations and patterns that lead most music to sounding relatively similar within the same guidelines. Will we ever run out of new music? ## Possibilities ------- Will there ever be a day where we have exhausted every single little possible musical idea? The average CD quality audio file at 5 minutes long 44.1 kHz is represented by 211,000,000 bits. 2 to the 211,000,000 power. That represents every single different iteration possible for that length of audio file. These are made out of 1's and 0's. In this length of audio file, it would be 63,000,000 digits long representing the number of different versions of 1's and 0's. ## Octaves ------- Take one measure that can use Whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, thirty-second notes. There would be 123,511,211,975,861,511,554,928,715,787,036 unique possible measures. This is absolutely RIDICULOUS. 432,329,886,000,000,000 is how old the universe is in seconds. Only 8 different notes, with three different type of note length are the most common configuration in todays music. There are over 78,364,164,096 combinations. If there were 100 songwriters writing a new melody per second, it would take 248 years to complete the possibilities. # No, we will never run out of new music. ## Why do so many songs sound the same? ------- Many songs sound like other songs. You can actually check a good resource to see what sounds do. soundsjustlike.com is a great resource. Why does Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and The Alphabet Song all have the same melody? This topic is so immense it may need to be explained in parts!!! ## Steemians, what do you think of this post? Do your heads hurt yet?
