Is this the most unnecessary feature in steemit.com?

I have been on this platform for a little bit over two months now, and it had never occurred to me to ask why this button exists at all... 

Is there any reason why you would not want to redeem the rewards of your hard work (or your bot's hard work) and transfer it to your balance? Or have I missed something here? It seems logical to redeem rewards as quickly as possible so you can make sure there is a maximum amount of SP or SBD for you to utilize, therefore I find it strange that this isn't done automatically by the system (since this transaction would be logged anyway).

For those of us that have had sleepless nights pondering why this button exists, I too have lost sleep over this and would like to know why it is there.

I understand it's to prevent bloat; so rather than potentially hundreds of smaller transactions each day, they're saved up until you hit the button. Streamlines something from a technical perspective.

That's interesting because I thought I read somewhere that you should redeem your rewards (i.e. check regularly) so that you always have as much steem as you can wield from your yield (especially when you don't have much of it). At the minimum I think it would save lots of people from 'wallet watching'... okay, it would save me from wallet watching :D
