Las personas que vivían en el caserío de "Las Marías" sentían un sopor que los mantenía adormecidos durante casi todo el día. Era tal la laxitud que apenas se movían para realizar las actividades necesarias para mantenerse con vida. 

Como las  perezas, se acostaban a descansar en los chinchorros que colgaban en los corredores de las casas y en los patios. Los ronquidos podían escucharse a kilómetros de distancia.

Las mujeres encargadas de hacer la comida se turnaban en este oficio, iban a cosechar los vegetales al huerto que sembraban cerca del pantano, donde las cosechas eran abundantes y los frutos alcanzaban grandes tamaños.  Recogían los huevos de las gallinas que también estaban sometidas, como todo ser vivo, a la lentitud del ambiente.  Había que despertarlas para que hicieran el esfuerzo de poner los huevos.

Los niños jugaban en las calles al escondite y era un juego de nunca acabar, pues el que buscaba no llegaba a descubrir a los otros niños y estos se quedaban dormidos en sus escondites hasta que los padres iban a buscarlos.

Un día recibieron la visita de Simón Isturiz,  médico del Ministerio de salud que llegó para investigar este fenómeno. Los más ancianos decían que la razón de todo lo que sucedía estaba en el pantano que rodeaba al pueblo. De allí salían los vapores adormecedores.

Simón comenzó su trabajo con mucho ánimo y responsabilidad. Tomó muestras de sangre a todos los pobladores e inclusive a algunos perros, gallinas y cerdos. Fue al pantano y tomó muestra de ese lodo oscuro y maloliente donde la vegetación crecía frondosa y las aves hacían sus nidos. 

Con los resultados de su investigación y de sus observaciones comenzó a generar una teoría, fuera de toda lógica. El pantano mantenía la vida  en sus dominios a costa de la energía de los habitantes del pueblo y estos no podían  escapar de allí, porque no  tenían la voluntad para hacerlo.

Escribió todo lo que suponía que ocurría y envió sus conclusiones al director del Ministerio, pero no había un basamento científico, nada que pudiera comprobarse. Creían que solo eran suposiciones, impresiones de una mente afectada por el ambiente.

La gente del pueblo  empezó a considerar al médico una persona peligrosa, que quería atentar contra el pantano, aun cuando Simón trato de explicarles lo que estaba pasando. Pero con el correr de los días los vapores comenzaron a afectarlo y poco a poco dejó a un lado su trabajo.

Cuando soñaba  lograba  recuperar la voluntad.  En ellos Simón sabía que debía huir de allí, pero para eso debía atravesar el pantano.

Una mañana presintió el peligro. La Sra. Juana, dueña de la casa donde había alquilado una habitación, le advirtió que querían detenerlo y encerrarlo en la comisaria.

Simón planificó ese mismo día su huida. Les llevaría una ventaja, así que recogió sus cosas y camino lo más rápido que pudo a la salida del pueblo,  pero comenzaron a seguirlo muy de cerca. 

Entró al pantano y se hundió en  el lodo, y fue avanzando aferrándose  a las raíces y a las  lianas que colgaban de los árboles. Las flores eran enormes y de colores brillantes. Grandes mariposas  revoloteaban sobre estas. Simón  comenzó a recuperar sus fuerzas en la medida que se internaba en el pantano y se alejaba del pueblo y esto lo convenció de que su teoría era cierta. 

Algunas de las personas que lo seguían también se metieron al pantano y entonces ocurrió algo sorprendente... el pantano comenzo a secarse y a endurecerse, la vegetación empezó a  morir. Las flores perdieron su color y las mariposas fueron cayendo una tras otra.

Simón aprovechó de correr y alejarse y al voltear para estar seguro de que no lo seguían, vio a las personas regresar al pueblo. El pantano había recobrado así... la vida.

Simón comprendió que estaba equivocado, que el pueblo y el pantano estaban conectados, que uno dependía del otro para sobrevivir y que él no volvería para intervenir en la vida de sus habitantes.

The people who lived in the hamlet of Las Marías felt a drowsiness that kept them asleep for most of the day. Such was the laxity that they barely moved to carry out the activities necessary to stay alive. Like the sloths, they would lie down to rest in the hammocks that hung in the corridors of the houses and in the patios. The snoring could be heard for miles around.

The women in charge of making the food took turns in this job, they went to harvest the vegetables in the orchard that they planted near the swamp where the harvests were abundant and the fruits reached large sizes.  They collected eggs from the hens that were also subjected, like all living beings, to the slowness of the environment.  It was necessary to wake them up so that they would make the effort to lay eggs.

The children played hide-and-seek in the streets and it was a never-ending game because the one who was searching never discovered the other children and they stayed asleep in their hiding places until their parents went to look for them.

One day they received a visit from Simon Isturiz, a doctor from the Ministry of Health who came to investigate this phenomenon. The elders said that the reason was the swamp that surrounded the town. That is where the numbing vapors came from.

Simon began his work with great courage and responsibility. He took blood samples from all the villagers and even from some dogs, chickens and pigs. He went to the swamp and took samples from the dark, foul-smelling mud where the vegetation grew luxuriantly and the birds made their nests. 

With all the results of his research and observations, he began to generate a theory, beyond all logic. The swamp maintained life in its domain at the expense of the energy of the inhabitants of the village and they could not escape from there, because they did not have the will to do so.

He wrote down everything he supposed was happening and sent his conclusions to the director of the Ministry, but there was no scientific basis, nothing that could be proven. They thought they were only suppositions, impressions of a mind affected by the environment.

The people of the village began to consider the doctor a dangerous person, who wanted to attack the swamp, even when Simon tried to explain to them what was going on. But as the days went by, the vapors began to affect him and little by little he put aside his work.

When he dreamed he was able to regain his will.  In them Simon knew that he had to flee from there, but for that he had to cross the swamp.

One morning he sensed danger. Mrs. Juana, the owner of the house where he had rented a room, warned him that they wanted to arrest him and lock him up in the police station.

Simon planned his escape that very day. He would have a head start, so he gathered his things and walked as fast as he could to the exit of the town, but he was being followed closely. 

He entered the swamp and sank into the mud, and moved forward clinging to the roots and vines that hung from the trees. The flowers were huge and brightly colored. Large butterflies fluttered over them. Simon began to regain his strength as he moved deeper into the swamp and away from the village and this convinced him that his theory was true. 

Some of the people following him also entered the swamp and then something surprising happened... the swamp began to dry up and harden, the vegetation began to die. 

Simón took the opportunity to run away and when he turned around to make sure he was not being followed, he saw the people returning to the village. The swamp had thus regained... life.

Simon understood that he was wrong, that the town and the swamp were connected, that one depended on the other to survive and that he would not return to intervene in the lives of its inhabitants.
