When I was a kid, if you had told me that there would be Korean restaurants in Sarawak, I'd have thought you were crazy.

However, in the past decade, K music and K dramas have spread rapidly in Sarawak. The people of Sarawak are now enjoying BTS, EXO, BLACKPINK, and other K pop groups; K dramas such as Goblin,  Reply 1997 and the latest hit Squid Game have also become a part of the culture.

One result of this phenomenon is that we are now seeing many Korean restaurants in Sarawak. Recently my family and I visited one of them, Common Ground, for a gastronomical experience.

 This restaurant occupies 2 floors. The building has a lot of glass panels.

When we entered the ground floor, I could see that the restaurant was already quite crowded. In fact, I had booked my reservation one week in advance before we could get a table for Sunday night.

The bar counter looks bright and inviting and even that was also full.

These are the stairs leading to the first floor of the Common Ground. I loved how the ceiling was lighted blue lights.

The neon decorations on the second floor make the restaurant looks chic and funky. It is not surprising that it attracts a younger crowd. In fact, I think that my wife Roselind and I were the oldest patrons.

This restaurant has a very high ceiling and while you are on the ground floor, the place looks enormous. From the first floor, I was able to take a photo of the ground floor.

The first floor has a cozy outdoor terrace. The tables on the terrace are also fully occupied.

The menu is extensive, and it took us several minutes to decide on what we wanted to order! Everything looked delicious, but we eventually decided on the Crispy Chicken with Cheese Pool; Toppoki; Jimdak with Cheese slice; and Dubu Kimchi with beef.

The food was spectacular!

The chicken had a nice crispiness to it, and it was paired perfectly with the cheese pool.

The Toppoki (simmered rice cake) was lightly seasoned, which was great because there were so many flavors going on at once at this point!

I loved the Jimdak (braised chicken) with cheese slice since it added some texture to all of the softness that we'd already experienced. The glass noodles complement this dish perfectly.

For Dubu Kimchi with beef, tofu is sitred fried with kimchi and beef. The beef was tender and the kimchi had just the right amount of spiciness.


Despite being a busy restaurant, the service was very fast and the staff was very friendly. The place itself is beautifully decorated, making it perfect for any occasion. The whole meal cost RM132 (or USD31) which was very reasonable. My only complaint was that the toilets are a bit dirty.

Overall my family has a fantastic gastronomical dining experience. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for Korean Restaurant to try out!
