Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari threatened Indian Auto Industry to shift to electrical vehicle manufacturing else face close down. Although it is desirable to convert to electrical vehicles but he and the government have not done proper home work. Look at the energy consumption pattern in below picture for India. It is obvious that source of 90% energy consumed in India is fossil fuels. So unless government has plans to find and generate electricity from sources other than fossil fuels - the conversion to electrical vehicle will just shift polluting fossil fuels from roads and big cities to nearby areas of electricity generating plants. Moreover, their will be additional energy loss due to: 1. first conversion of fossil energy to electrical energy 2. then storing this electrical energy into battery 3. using it in electrical vehicles Thereby increasing overall fossil fuels consumption.  Therefore, Converting to electrical vehicles should be done by in parrallel huge R&D investment in solar and battery field along with tax rebates for those who are in the field of solar and batter manufacturing. But if one sees recent government announcements -it is asking IITs, universities, and research institutes to self/part fund themselves by doing industry projects. I think it is not difficult to guess that with these demands from higher education and research institutes any ground breaking technology can be invented or developed. The height of the misplaced government initiatives vs tax structure is - on one side government wants to promote electrical vehicles and on the other hand GST tax on batteries is maximum i.e. 28%. In conclusion -it is easy to guess that government policies are not in sync and not future oriented.
