I love listening to my grandma when she starts to narrate how she and others had lived a good and comfortable life in the past, and when she says some aspects of living, compared to the present moment, all I could do is smile and make her know life presently is easier and I love it. At that moment, grandma would smile too making me understand how life was better for them too. 
</div>

Life of our forefathers was original and natural compared to the present life where many things are artificial, especially looking at a lady from her hair down to her toes. Hardly would you see a lady who has it all natural looking at her part of the body. But in those days, they believe being natural is beautiful too. There was nothing like a competition of different kinds as they lived a simple life.
</div>

I will be giving some scenarios which would make me give a part of my opinion that the present life we live is better than that of our forefathers and foremothers *(if there is anything like that).*

Some years back, my dad narrated how he had an accident while still a youth in Lagos. It was a “near-death” for him but God brought him back to life. My dad came to Lagos from his village (Kwara State) for greener pastures and then, there was nothing like phones or the internet to reach out to their loved ones and families.

<div class=text-justify>

For three and half months, no one knew he had an accident, not even his close friends because there was no phone to communicate with. It was someone who accidentally met one of his friends on the road that explained where my Dad was and the friend after seeing my Dad in such a condition had to travel down to my state to inform his family. 
</div>

<div class=text-justify>

You can't compare such a life without a phone or any means to reach anyone to the present life because technology has made things easier where you could just place a call to one's family letting them know of the condition of such a victim. 
</div>

<div class=text-justify>

What if my Dad had died or the other person didn't go out when he met his friend? No one would know, even his family, and for such, after many months or years, the family would conclude that he is dead and in another aspect, they will think he was cruel to abandon his home not knowing what happened. 
</div>

Another instance was when my grandma got to know about WhatsApp video calls. During our forefather's era, there was nothing like video calls where you can see your loved ones after many years they have left home or travelled. My grandma was shocked and at the same time happy to see her daughter who had been abroad for years through video call and all she was doing all through the call was waving consistently as she didn't believe technology had gone to that aspect.

She started using that to sing everywhere in the home that technology has made life easier. Seeing her daughter through WhatsApp video brought joy to her because she was always thinking about her every time. What if there was nothing like that? Once a child leaves home for greener pastures, they will only be praying to see him or her again. 
</div>

I spoke with grandma yesterday through video call when my sister travelled home, she was waving and smiling on the phone as she was happy to see my face after months of seeing her.
</div> 

<div class=text-justify>

In this instance, we have a better life than our forefathers in terms of communication through phones and the internet.

Should we talk about cooking that has been made easier now? You don't have to sit around the firewood, blowing air into the thick wood for the fire to come out and in the end, you develop fever when you keep doing it.

Till now, grandma prefers using firewood even when one of her daughters bought a gas cooker for her just to make the job easier for the children living with her, but she will refuse to fill the gas once it finishes because of the economy.
</div> 

<div class=text-justify>

With the existence of gas and electric cooker, we don't need to stress ourselves preparing delicious meals which at the end of the day, we may not want to eat again. I know how much I suffer when lighting the firewood at home because grandma refused to buy kerosene at home and we would have to blow all the air in our bodies to produce fire. Thank God we ain't paying for the air we breathe in, it could have been worse. We use matches and black stuff to produce fire and this would make me angry to the extent that I fill the gas when I am at home.

In this instance, we have it better than our forefathers.

Though their lives were better too in the sense that they drink clean water from the river and do not have contact with any disease. Whereas, we would have to filter our water before drinking to avoid malaria or typhoid.

Should we talk about security in their era? There was nothing like kidnapping then. It is easier for them to locate a child's parents once he or she is missing but in our present era, we would assume the child had been kidnapped and killed. No place is safe today compared to their lives where they walk freely any time of the day. The only time they aren't allowed to step out, especially for women is when there is a festival ceremony like what we call **“Oro”** in Yoruba land.

Food was cheap then compared to now which would make me conclude in this aspect that they had it better. Their means of livelihood were through farming and fishing. Though they will have to go through rigorous work before eating peacefully their hard efforts even in the sun.

For the other question; [do I think we are in happier times than they were?]() Just like what @burlarj said in his post, you can't miss the life you never lived. Judging with the present times now, I would say I am happy and there is no way I would be able to judge others since I didn't live in their times, but looking at how technology has made things easier and more comfortable for us, it is happiness to see how things are going for us where we don't need to struggle for some things. 
</div>

Our forefathers also had their happy moments too and to answer this question genuinely, let me say what my grandma said since she had tasted her life and the present life, she confirmed that life now is also happier with the evolution of technology, so also their own life too, they were happy.
