Necessity is the mother of invention!

For many years I worked on building sites and in peoples homes making kitchen units, TV cabinets and generally anything to do with wood

My pickup was usually overloaded with materials, tools and of course a heavy and cumbersome workbench

I designed and made these workbenches  out of Shutter ply and solid pine using 75 x 22 mm - 3 inches by three quarter of an inch

They proved to be lightweight surprisingly sturdy

These  two (joined) benches can be used separately or assembled as in this photo 

Here we were making a pagoda and needed the extra worktop length

The outside legs are hinged onto the two separate plywood table tops, enabling them to fold underneath
Using the two units together only one middle leg is needed. The additional leg unit is left at home when the longer bench is needed, thus reducing space and weight on the pickup

The cross pieces are bolted onto the uprights using wingnuts, so no tools are needed for assembly. They are removed and loaded as separate pieces, while the legs simply fold under the table top, taking up minimal space on both pickup and when not in use

The angled lengths of pine also give strength and stability
