It paid off after a few months because nothing did. She didn’t think much about the incidents for a while. She shared the stories with the crew at work when the conversation turned toward the paranormal one night. They seemed genuinely intrigued and the office resonated with interjections and a few expletives. </p> <p>“Are you serious? I would have left screaming and never gone back.” was the general consensus. Honestly, Lyla didn’t know why she stayed. It just didn’t frighten her bad enough to leave. Even though she felt the horrible draining of any joy when the incidents would happen, she never felt threatened physically or spiritually. She wasn’t completely certain she fully believed what happened to her. Maybe it was just a dream. The next incident confirmed nothing.</p> <p>Lyla had just laid down from a long night at work. The room darkening curtains did their job well. There were only a few pinpoints of light around the window. She drifted in the state between asleep and awake; unconscious of her thoughts. It was always sudden. She usually felt the touch before the thick weight of dread and hopelessness on the air. It was more intimate this time.</p> <p>There was a hand...or something beneath her and another touching her side. The touch was like rape. A sensation Lyla wanted to shrink away from, but she was always against the bed. Now, this time, she couldn’t tighten her body against the bed because it was under her too! She held back the panic. She never felt the hand slide beneath her. It was just there. As her breath quickened, it was then she felt the aerobic pressure of someone or something in the air behind her like it was leaning in. Then the voice came.</p> <p>It wasn’t loud. She thought she may have heard a mangled breath accompany it this time, but she was unsure. It was distinctly male where the one before, the “kill” one, had registered in her mind as feminine. It wasn’t guttural, but spoke strongly. It had no need to gather strength to produce the words this time. It was strong enough already. The word came out like coarse sandpaper. </p> <p>“En-ti-ty.”</p> <p>It enunciated the syllables like they were important. As if this one word conveyed the entire description and essence of its being. It spoke, and in a split second it was gone.</p> <p>“Fuh...shh...huh...no joke...entity.” Lyla stammered.</p> <p>Her breath was audible. She was shaken. It was building. It was getting stronger. It was freaking breathing this time. It didn’t drain any good feeling Lyla had, it snatched it away like taking an unwanted weed from the Earth. Clearly, anything positive about her was absurd. It was getting vicious now. She grew pale thinking of what it might say next. She didn’t want to know.</p> <p>Her mind churned on. She lay for a long time thinking about what she was going to do before sleep claimed her. It wasn’t good sleep though. She tossed and turned restlessly and rose tired for work that evening. She regaled the crew at work with her latest tale. It was nothing more to them than campfire stories where they could incur a brief thrill at her expense. Lyla was weakening.</p> <p><br></p> </html>
