I can say that I have quite a few skills that I acquired throughout my life, and a lot of them revolve around technology.

I can repair computers, I can repair phones, I can code a bit, script a bit, do some graphic design, do some video editing, writing, and a few others.

I know how to do all those things because I've always been a curious person, and I always loved technology. Whenever people asked me "Do you know how this program works" or "Do you know how to fix this problem", I usually answer "Not yet", if I actually don't know, and then I begin googling.

But although I know all those things, and although I'm a curious person by nature and I like to learn new skills all the time, there is one in particular that helped me throughout my life almost every time I used it.

I know how to keep my mouth shut.

Believe me, knowing how to shut up and to not say what I actually want to say saved my skin more times than I can count, or at least kept me out of ugly situations. If nothing serious was at stake, well, at least it helped me not embarrass myself.

There have been many times in which a topic was discussed by people I was with, and some of the things they were saying seemed stupid, or crazy, or completely wrong. At those moments I wanted to say something, to correct them with the little knowledge I had. Often, it turned out that they were right, and I was wrong, and by keeping my mouth shut, not only did I not embarrass myself, but I also learned a few things.

There have been many moments in which I got annoyed or angry because of what someone said to me, or because of what they did, even if at first it didn't seem like a big deal. It also doesn't help that I excessively overthink everything, and all the time. Keeping my mouth shut in those moments helped me avoid countless useless arguments and fights that would've been the result of nothing but my misunderstanding of the words or actions of a specific person, and also the result of too much overthinking and imagination.

Finally, keeping my mouth shut means everybody around had to be the ones talking, which almost always worked in my favor. When other people talk, I learn things, either about them, their opinions, or just random facts that I might not know. Really, the easiest way to get to know a person, what they like, what they dislike, what makes them happy and what annoys them, is to simply shut up and let them talk, either to you, or someone else. And then you just have to listen. You'll learn more about them than if you'd ask them questions directly.

All in all, being quiet and not opening my mouth too much helped me throughout the entirety of my life.

There are, of course, exceptions, situations in which being quiet will do more harm then if you'd say something. Being the witness of injustice, rudeness or lack of common sense and saying something might benefit you, or those around you. Being the victim of wrongful accusations and not saying anything might make others think you are quiet because you know those accusations are true, even if they are not. In that case, defending yourself is the right thing to do. The examples can keep going.

It is up to you to decide when to be quiet and when to say something. However, whenever you're faced with that dilemma, you need to stop and think hard about whether saying something is worth it, and if being quiet won't simply serve you better.

What about [this](https://ecency.com/informationwar/@truthforce/call-it-cpos-c-for-cartel-hive-isn-t-dpos-and-neither-was-steem#@unorgmilitia/re-xplosive-qwca4z) one?

I think that @unorgmilitia is being rude by calling me dipshit. Even if he is right with the fact that having Hive power is already an investment.

By the way, he ignored (muted?) me, so he probably will not even see my reply.

@raikuhen ·
It is in this type of situations when people like me should be quiet, just like I mentioned in my post.

There are several reasons for that:

1. My opinion does nothing on the subject. It won't change his mind about you, and my opinion won't defend yours, or you as a person. I don't like fights, and so I avoid them, because they rarely result in anything valuable. Some people are rude, others are egoistical, others think they know way more than others. It is not my job to change their mind, or to advice them to change the way they talk. They are responsible for the way they behave, and they will get what they deserve in time, be it good, or bad. If you do not like the way he talked to you, or the way he talks in general, that is what the ignore / mute option is for. I learned a long time ago not to argue with people who do not wish to be part of an argument and only want to instill superiority while making others look inferior. Should he shut up and stop calling you ugly things? Maybe. Should you shut up and stop paying attention to people like him, and instead focus your time doing something productive or fun? Maybe. It is not my place to decide. I despise drama, so I avoid it.

2. I am too ignorant of the matter itself (I'm talking about the entire article). I am too uneducated when it comes to how Hive works, or how it should work at a "political" level. I hate politics. I try to avoid anything politically related like the plague, because I dislike it. Everyone thinks they're right, no one thinks they're wrong. Everyone has opinions and everyone has a solution for a problem, yet no one actually solves anything. That is why I always try to stay away from these things. It is not my place nor my desire to change the platform, for the better or for the worse, and having endless discussions about it won't do anything other than give me the impression that I am somehow doing something, like so many other people think, when my "contribution" is equal to nothing. I have written on the subject a few times in the past, when Steemit was still fairly young and Hive wasn't a thing, and I predicated how the platform is gonna become a shit show in time - too many people would join who don't give a crap about creating good content, and they will post so much shit in order to get even a few cents, that any good and high quality post will be buried under that shit within seconds or minutes. It happened then, on Steemit, and it's happening here, on Hive. I don't necessarily think that too many people create instead of consuming. I think that people vote shitty content instead of helping good creators rise up. When you ignore a post on a fairly important topic such as advice for young people on how to better learn coding, or the dangers of climate change, or a discussion on the impact cryptocurrencies have on the environment, and you instead upvote some random chick who uploaded a pic of herself, or some random post involving conspiracy theories, or just a post with random picture of a landscape, then you're doing a disservice to the platform itself. As I said in the past, the ability to gain money from the platform is Steemit's / Hive's best, and worse feature. In theory, it enables talented people to get rewarded for their efforts. In practice however, people who just want to make a buck take advantage of the system and use whatever shitty tactics they can to get that money. You're not receiving the rewards you want because either you're not creating content that people are interested on, which applies to me as well, or, most probably, because they get nothing out of helping you. If they vote a whale, they receive a part of the gains, and, they think, maybe the whale will notice them and will give them something, to "return the favor". In your case, you're just as poor as me, and a lot of other people on this platform. If you can't provide them the chance for monetary gain, then the chances of making some money simply by trying to be a good guy are fairly low. I only still do it because I like to write.

3. I don't like drama. I really don't. If people are assholes I just block them and that's it. I have a limited amount of time on my hands every day, because I work a lot. When I do have that free time I choose to either be productive or relax. So joining random drama isn't something I want to do. And I don't think it's something you should do either. Just do your thing, and if someone says something you don't like, block them and mind your own business.

P.S - Sorry if it takes me too much to reply to your comments, or someone else's (I might even write a quick post about this), but being at work for most of the day, and coming home either late, or simply too tired, I don't always have the time or the energy to even check Hive.

I also try to stay away from fights and drama. But I like to write down the truth, for example what you also wrote:

> If you can't provide them the chance for monetary gain, then the chances of making some money simply by trying to be a good guy are fairly low.

This is true. And even when I offer some monetary gain (for example giveaways), people still rarely care.

And when I mention this, some people say that I am negative, and I am complaining, while all I do is being honest. The experience itself is really negative, but I am sure everyone would feel similarly after more than 4 years of activity on the platform.

Sometimes I receive good upvotes, but mostly I earn cents with most of my posts. And most of the people can say the same about their own posts. This is because people either focus on their own post, or as you wrote focus on the whales. This results in a lot of ignored and overlooked posts, and many disappointed users. And writing this fact down is not being negative, and not complaining either. It is simply honestly mentioning a fact. I (and some other people) mentioned it many times, and nothing changed. So maybe doing this (mentioning this fact) is time wasting. But there are also many fake positive people, who describe Hive as a life changing platform, while it is obvious that it constantly fails to deliver that life changing thing to its users. A few cents will not going to change anyone's life, and that is what most people are earning with most of their posts.

I think that you are also right by saying that maybe I should focus my time doing something productive or fun.

I muted you because I don't ever want to be showing someone new this awesome thing called PeakD/hive and end up scrolling past content from a person like you whining about how they are contemplating leaving the chain, because there is more content creators than consumers and therfore you don't get enough exposure..
