# <center>Efecto placebo</center>

Amadeo era un hombre muy supersticioso, desde pequeño el conocimiento popular y el sortilegio ejercen mayor dominio en su mente que la ciencia y la lógica, cuando no encuentra explicación a ciertos fenómenos se los atribuye a la magia. Cree en los astros, espiritismo, brujas, aparecidos, duendes y cualquier otra criatura mística. Hace unas cuantas semanas atrás quedó sin empleo y a sus cincuenta años no ha podido conseguido otro, así que se resignó a ser el sepulturero del pueblo. Al principio, tenía mucho miedo, sentía un escalofrío extraño en el cuerpo cada vez que iba a cumplir con su oficio, pero con el tiempo tal sensación fue desapareciendo. 

Debido a su soledad, era viudo y sus hijos vivían en otra casa, convirtió el panteón en un santuario, trataba con mucho respeto a los difuntos, incluso les hablaba, esperando como respuesta una señal para desenterrar un tesoro. Poco a poco, se acostumbró a la calma del lugar, disfrutaba largas horas sumergido en aquel silencio. La tristeza y melancolía que se respiraba en la atmósfera se instalaban en los huesos de Amadeo. 

Pero una noche escuchó voces que venían desde el ala oeste del cementerio. En primera instancia pensó que eran espíritus de difuntos que han dejado asuntos pendientes, almas en pena buscando redención. “Quizás necesiten ayuda en el plano terrenal, un ente que les sirva de conexión con sus familiares”, especulaba mientras caminaba con cautela hacia el origen del ruido. Por si acaso algo se salía de control, llevaba su machete como medida de protección.

Al llegar al sitio, se encontró a dos jóvenes profanando la tumba de Jacinto Coronel, quien en vida era conocido como el brujo del pueblo, cargaban con las cruces de bronce y otros objetos metálicos de cierto valor. Uno de los muchachos había sustraído de la urna un collar y un frasco con un polvo extraño que reposaba al lado de la osamenta. Amadeo se quedó sorprendido ante la acción de los intrusos, igual los delincuentes, puesto que creían que el sepulturero no dormía en el cementerio.

La sorpresa de Amadeo se transformó en indignación y furia, estaba colérico y al levantar su machete los jóvenes emprendieron la huida. Amadeo persiguió a uno, pero su arrebato era tan grande que tropezó y cayó aparatosamente a los pocos metros de la tumba de ultrajada. Allí quedó en el piso quejándose del dolor, en tanto el joven al que perseguía se regresó, destapó el envase con el polvo y se lo vació encima a Amadeo, diciéndole: “Ahora tienes la maldición de Jacinto Coronel”. El hombre se quedó inmóvil con los ojos desorbitados.

Tras ese suceso, Amadeo quedó afligido, permaneció en su casa y no regresó al cementerio, perdió sus energías, se sentía atado a su cama. No se levantó durante una semana, la habitación era un asco, su delgadez era síntoma de su pésima alimentación, las ojeras ocupaban gran parte de rostro. Lucía envejecido, solo pensaba en la maldición, Jacinto Coronel estaba sediento de vida y venía por la suya. Los pobladores desconocían por qué él no había ido a su lugar de trabajo a cuidar el panteón. El rumor se hizo eco en los oídos de su hijo, quien oportunamente fue a visitarlo. Kamil quedó impactado al ver a su padre en dicho estado, lo llevó obligado al médico para una evaluación. 
 
El doctor lo refirió al hospital, allí le aplicaron los primeros auxilios, hidrataron y le hicieron muchos análisis para emitir un diagnóstico e indicar el tratamiento. Los médicos coincidieron en que Amadeo estaba bien a nivel orgánico y el origen de su malestar era mental. Antes de salir del centro hospitalario, Kamil limpió la habitación de su padre enviando a la basura todo aquello que tenía que ver con supersticiones y magia. Por su parte, Amadeo decía que su padecer requería de un buen espiritista, al tiempo que le contó a su hijo lo que había sucedido en el cementerio.

Ante tal confesión, su hijo ideó un plan para que su padre no volviera a entregarse a la depresión y a la tristeza. Al día siguiente, le hizo creer que visitó a una hija de Jacinto Coronel y aquella mujer le preparó un brebaje muy poderoso que revierte toda maldad. Desde el primer trago, Amadeo sintió mejoría. Durante cuatro días consecutivos se tomó aquel líquido extraño y observó cómo recuperaba las energías perdidas. Su semblante adquirió las facciones vigorosas del pasado y, en poco tiempo, estaba completamente recuperado.

Kamil estaba muy contento, su plan funcionó. Contempló en silencio lo maravilloso que es el poder de la mente. Nunca fue al cementerio ni buscó a un familiar de Jacinto Coronel, el brebaje que le dio a su padre era jugo de níspero con manzanilla y tomillo.

Amadeo was a very superstitious man, since he was a child popular knowledge and sorcery exercise greater dominance in his mind than science and logic, when he does not find an explanation for certain phenomena he attributes them to magic. Believe in the stars, spiritualism, witches, ghosts, goblins and any other mystical creature. A few weeks ago he lost his job and at the age of fifty he hasn't been able to get another one, so he resigned himself to being the village gravedigger. At first, he was very afraid, he felt a strange shiver in his body every time he went to do his job, but over time this feeling disappeared.

Due to his loneliness, he was a widower and his children lived in another house, he turned the pantheon into a sanctuary, treated the deceased with great respect, even spoke to them, waiting in response for a sign to unearth a treasure. Little by little, he got used to the calm of the place, he enjoyed long hours immersed in that silence. The sadness and melancholy that was breathed in the atmosphere settled in Amadeo's bones.

But one night he heard voices coming from the west wing of the cemetery. At first he thought they were spirits of the dead who have left unfinished business, souls in pain seeking redemption. "Perhaps they need help on the earthly plane, an entity that serves as a connection with their relatives," he speculated as he walked cautiously towards the source of the noise. Just in case something got out of control, he carried his machete as a protective measure.

Upon arrival at the site, two young men were found desecrating the tomb of Jacinto Coronel, who in life was known as the village witch, carrying bronze crosses and other valuable metal objects. One of the boys had stolen from the urn a necklace and a bottle with a strange powder that rested next to the skeleton. Amadeo was surprised by the action of the intruders, just like the criminals, since they believed that the gravedigger did not sleep in the cemetery.

Amadeo's surprise turned into indignation and fury, he was angry and when he raised his machete the young men fled. Amadeo chased one, but his outburst was so great that he stumbled and fell spectacularly a few meters from the outraged tomb. There he remained on the floor complaining of the pain, while the young man he was chasing turned back, uncovered the container with the powder and emptied it on Amadeo, telling him: "Now you have the curse of Jacinto Coronel." The man froze, his eyes wide.

After that event, Amadeo was afflicted, he stayed at home and did not return to the cemetery, he lost his energy, he felt tied to his bed. She didn't get up for a week, the room was disgusting, her thinness was a symptom of her poor diet, the dark circles under her eyes occupied a large part of her face. He looked aged, he only thought about the curse, Jacinto Coronel was thirsty for life and came for his own. The villagers did not know why he had not gone to his place of work to take care of the pantheon. The rumor echoed in the ears of his son, who opportunely went to visit him. Kamil was shocked to see his father in such a state, he forced him to the doctor for an evaluation.
 
The doctor referred him to the hospital, where they applied first aid, hydrated and did many tests to issue a diagnosis and indicate treatment. The doctors agreed that Amadeo was fine organically and the origin of his discomfort was mental. Before leaving the hospital, Kamil cleaned his father's room, throwing away everything that had to do with superstitions and magic. For his part, Amadeo said that his suffering required a good spiritualist, while he told his son what had happened in the cemetery.

Faced with such a confession, his son devised a plan so that his father would not surrender to depression and sadness again. The next day, he made her believe that he visited a daughter of Jacinto Coronel and that woman prepared a very powerful concoction for him that reverses all evil. From the first drink, Amadeo felt better. For four consecutive days he drank that strange liquid and watched as he regained lost energy. His countenance took on the vigorous features of the past, and in a short time, he was completely recovered.

Kamil was very happy, his plan worked. He silently contemplated how wonderful the power of the mind is. He never went to the cemetery or looked for a relative of Jacinto Coronel, the concoction he gave his father was medlar juice with chamomile and thyme.
