Gambling -The Ink well Creative Non-fiction Prompt #15.
<div class="text-justify">

My mother taught me not to play lotteries because they are devilish games, which turn into vices, she explained:
"To those who participate in these games of chance, the devil gives them riches and then takes them away."
 He named several examples of people he knew who with a lottery number had won excessive amounts of money, with it they bought houses, cars, improvised some business and after a certain time they were ruined. I grew up with those principles. That's why I don't like to try my luck with any game of chance.

I remember the experience I had with my friend Chuchú. In 1965, I lived in Bolivar Neighborhood-Cumaná-Venezuela with my mother's family, diagonal to our house lived my neighbor Jesus Villalba (affectionately called Chuchu), with his wife, Zelandia and their 5 children: 3 girls and 2 boys. He worked as a Public Accountant in a Banking Entity. His wife took care of the housework and childcare. He loved his family very much.

I was 14 years old at the time. We formed a great friendship with him and the rest of his family. He named me godmother of his eldest daughter and we established a great compadrazgo.

.
After several years, his children reached adolescence, studying in high school. Meanwhile, Chuchú continued to play lotteries and other games of chance, until one day luck touched him and he won an excessive amount of money, becoming a multimillionaire. As soon as he collected that prize, he bought his mother a house in the neighborhood where he lived, so he could move in with his siblings. Since they lived in the country.

He bought him and his family a house in a middle-class community, which they moved into immediately, and he also bought a late-model car. From that moment on, my compadre's personality changed, he became a bit vain and quit his job at the bank. Everything was going very well.

Soon after, Chuhú got himself a mistress for whom he abandoned his family. As a consequence, his wife went to the countryside to live with relatives. This situation and the abandonment of his father, led his last son to take a bad path. Jesus ignored this situation and continued with his lover.

As the years passed, his children became adults and most of them became independent. By then he no longer had financial resources, he had to sell the car to continue with his gambling. He then lost the money acquired with that sale. The house he bought for his wife and mother was not sold because it was in their names.

As the years went by, he grew old, he became ruined, his mistress left him. He could not return to the house he bought for his wife, because the son who took the wrong path. He prevented him from entering his compound. He had to return to the house he bought for his mother.

Today he suffers from cancer. The only income he receives is from an old age pension and from his eldest daughter who helps him with his food and medical treatment.

This situation that my compadre CHuchú is currently suffering as a consequence of the prize he received in the lottery and other games of chance, corroborates the principles that my mother taught me.

@rammargarita, There is no doubt that instead of lottery, gambling and accidental money, the money earned through hard work is very blessed, I am also not interested in lottery, or gambling. This shock that made money also affects your personality. As a result, a person becomes a victim of addiction, pride, and many other bad habits.

It is amazing that you have a real-life example of your mother's teaching. You tell this 'story' well. You use literary techniques to bring the story to life. We learn about Chuhú's history, his motivation in life and the trajectory that life takes. The critical point for Chuhú, the central event around which his life revolves, is winning the lottery. By describing this character arc, you validate the premise of your piece: gambling leads to ruin.

A reader might suggest, however, that it was Chuhú's character and not the lottery that led to ruin. So many paths he could have taken and at each point he chose the wrong one.

Thank you for sharing this creative nonfiction piece with us, @rammargarita. Once again, we find your illustration delightful.
