Oír estos versos en la voz de Héctor Lavoe y empezar a moverse es siempre una misma cosa, como parte de una coreografía muchas veces ensayada, cada quien mueve sus dedos, palmea la clave, mueve su cabeza y termina moviendo la cadera y los pies.

El timbal es un instrumento de percusión,muy importante en los grupos y orquestas de salsa, una pieza clave en el mantenimiento y expresión del ritmo. Los historiadores ubican su origen más remoto en los tambores de guerra fabricados en  Asia y Europa. 

Una variación  de este instrumento, más parecida  a las que conocemos actualmente, se habría producido en Cuba. De allí saltó a Nueva York, desde donde se extendió por   América latina, primero, y más tarde por todo el planeta. 

El Pavo Frank, eminente percusionista venezolano, señala que la responsabilidad de la  difusión de las originales pailas cubanas por el mundo recae en Tito Puente.   Según el Pavo, Puente habría llevado a nueva York un timbal que le obsequiaron en  Cuba y desde  este modelo empezaron a fabricarlos en los Estados Unidos.

 Los instrumentos de percusión en ese momento se tensaban y afinaban con calor, tanto para uso doméstico, como para uso profesional. 

 Carlos "Patato" Valdez  desarrolló  un sistema para tensar y afinar las congas con un aro metálico, pernos y tuercas. Este sistema sustituyó la tradicional forma de tensar los cueros.  Luego la compañía Latin Percussion extendió este sistema a los timbales  y  también a los bongós. 

 Tito Puente y Carlos Patato Valdez fueron representantes de esa compañía. Los músicos se encargaron de  hacer giras promocionales y de dictar charlas y talleres por  todo el mundo.  Para promocionar  los instrumentos  construidos por la compañía se formó el Latin Percusión Jazz Ensemble.




 Los aficionados a la salsa y  bailadores   podemos evocar  con gusto y admiración varias piezas dedicadas  al timbal,  o  a  los timbaleros.

El orden no implica preferencia alguna.

Unos cuantos  líderes y directores de bandas salseras han sido  destacados timbaleros: recuerdo a Rafael Cortijo, Kako, Tito Puente, Willie Rosario, Jimmy Sabater, Frank el Pavo Hernández,  Alfredo Padilla, Carlos Quintana Tabaco, Cheo Navarro, Mario Muñoz Papaito, Manny Oquendo, Ralf Izarry, José Maderas, Tito Rodriguez junior.

Vienen a mi memoria los nombres de otros importantes timbaleros: Louie Romero, Endel Dueño, Mike collazo, Nicki Marrero, Jessie Colon, Orestes Vilató,  Edgardo Morales. y Luisito Quintero a quien me voy a referir especialmente.

Luis Quintero es un músico, percusionista caraqueño que desde muy temprano ha estado vinculado a importantes agrupaciones venezolanas, entre ellas, Guaco, El trabuco venezolano y la orquesta de Oscar de León. 
Ha participado como percusionista con artistas como Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Richard Bona, Willie Colón, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Nuyorican Soul, Masters at Work, por nombrar los más importantes. 

En la actualidad se desempeña como timbalero de la Spanish Harlem Orchestra y forma parte de la agrupación Elements of life, con quienes se ha presentado en los más importantes escenarios de la salsa y del jazz latino.


La idea  inicial para elaborar este post surge de mi inquietud por   confirmar  si  <b>Chamito Candela</b> la  popular canción del grupo Daiquirí estaba dedicada a  él.

 Investigando   encontré que así es y que la pieza constituye un reconocimiento temprano a las habilidades y al talento que desde niño, Quintero mostraba.
 Como resultado de mi búsqueda pude precisar que Luisito,  (siendo un niño), formó parte del grupo caraqueño Siete Cueros, grupo antecedente de Daiquirí.  Luisito ya era candela tocando los timbales.
Aquí les dejo un vídeo del grupo Siete Cueros interpretando <b>Chamito Candela</b>. Verán en la grabación a Alberto Schlezinger, a Evio y Giordano  di Marzo y apreciaran un solo de timbal del niño Luis Quintero.

Hearing these verses in the voice of Héctor Lavoe and beginning to move is always the same thing, as part of a choreography many times rehearsed, each one moves his fingers, claps the key, moves his head and ends up moving his hips and feet.

The timbal is a percussion instrument, very important in salsa groups and orchestras, a key piece in the maintenance and expression of rhythm. Historians trace its most remote origin to the war drums made in Asia and Europe.

A variation of this instrument, more similar to the ones we know today, would have been produced in Cuba. From there it jumped to New York, from where it spread throughout Latin America, first, and later throughout the planet.

El Pavo Frank, an eminent Venezuelan percussionist, points out that the responsibility for the dissemination of the original Cuban pailas throughout the world rests with Tito Puente. According to Pavo, Puente would have brought to New York a kettledrum that was given to him in Cuba and from this model they began to manufacture them in the United States.

Percussion instruments at that time were heated and tuned with heat, both for home use and professional use. Carlos "Patato" Valdez developed a system to tension and tune congas with a metal ring, bolts and nuts. This system replaced the traditional way of tightening the leathers. Later the Latin Percussion company extended this system to timbales and also to bongos. Tito Puente and Carlos Patato Valdez were representatives of that company. The musicians were in charge of doing promotional tours and giving talks and workshops around the world. To promote the instruments built by the company, the Latin Percussion Jazz Ensemble was formed.
Salsa fans and dancers can evoke with pleasure and admiration several pieces dedicated to the timpani, or the timbaleros.

Luis Quintero is a musician, percussionist from Caracas, who from an early age has been linked to important Venezuelan groups, including Guaco, El trabuco venezolano and the Oscar de León orchestra.

He currently works as a timbalero for the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and is part of the Elements of life group, with whom he has performed on the most important salsa and Latin jazz stages.
The initial idea to elaborate this post arises from my concern to confirm if <b> Chamito Candela </b> the popular song of the Daiquirí group was dedicated to him.

 Investigating, I found that this is the case and that the piece constitutes an early recognition of the skills and talent that Quintero displayed since childhood.
 As a result of my search, I was able to specify that Luisito, (being a child), was part of the Caracas group Siete Cueros, the predecessor of Daiquirí. Luisito was already candela playing the timbal.
Here is a video of the group Siete Cueros performing <b> Chamito Candela </b>. You will see Alberto Schlezinger, Evio and Giordano di Marzo on the recording and you will appreciate a timpani solo by the boy Luis Quintero.
