I have a YouTube channel on which I've done DIY type stuff, mostly automotive repair, and it generates a decently hefty amount of traffic I’ve found. I haven't seen anything like this on Steemit as of yet, so I decided to do a new Steemit exclusive (unlisted for the first 24 hours) post on here to see how it goes. I took a hiatus from doing videos a couple years back for several reasons. My wife and I had a new child, and I’m the primary caregiver, so that created an issue with finding time. Also, my computer was old as dirt, so it was like watching paint dry waiting for videos to render. Recently, I bought a sweet stand up computer desk off of Craigslist and I just got a killer new PC (also off of Craigslist) which will allow me to do any kind of editing I want with ease into the foreseeable future.
The problem with these is that the two purchases are not exactly compatible with each other. You see, the desk moves up and down with a hand crank (to be motorized in a future desk hack), and so as a result, any cords connected to the desk will move up and down. I don’t want all of the cords for the peripherals moving constantly, so I decided that I need the computer tower to move up and down with the desk, leaving only 1 or 2 cords to move when the desk moves (coaxial cord for my modem and the main power strip). As a result, managing their tidiness will be simplified when I set to that task.
This first video is about how I mounted the computer to the desk which was poorly designed for mounting a computer tower. It’s a fairly simple design, but I like it and the end result looks pretty good in my opinion, at least at first glance. I’m not much of a woodworker, so I sort of stumble my way through using a router to bevel the edges of the platform (I’ve never done this before), and drilling the holes in a cosmetically pleasing way presented an interesting challenge as well. At close inspection, this isn’t a show piece, but it gets the job done and nobody will notice the imperfections unless they look closely, which is all I need. Details of how I built it in the video below. I look forward to hearing thoughts on this format for Steemit. Enjoy!
