Is the Reward Pool In Mortal Danger?

Yesterday the enigmatic Steemian @berniesanders (creator of the original upvote bot @randowhale ) posted a call to action asking the entire Steemit community to come together to flag the rewards on @haejin's posts. He put forth the idea that the rewards were largely the result of numerous fake follower accounts and shadow whale most likely operated by haejin himself.

Another high profile Steemian, @themarkymark  (owner of the well ran upvote bot @buildawhale ), did some excellent detective work and posted the results in the comment section of Bernie's post. It showed that even after some flagging that Haejin was due 6.7% of the current reward pool.

As expected the community began to rally to the call. But something interesting happen. A flood of Haejin supporters showed up to defend their guru. They claimed his cryptocurrency advice is of great value to them and that his powers of market prediction are god like. They also claimed that his several posts a day frequency is what they need because it gives them up to the minute information. One other thing was abundantly clear though. They didn't care much about Steemit beyond their undying support for Haejin.

Okay then, let's make some concessions:

One: Haejin is a great crypto guru with good advice
Two: He has real followers and many of them followed him to Steemit
Three: He really is getting a lot of up votes from real people

Here's Why He Still Can't Be Allowed to Keep Getting 6.7% of the Reward Pool

It comes down to simple math. If Steemit had 15 Haejin's the reward pool would run dry. Wanna kill Steemit, I can think of no quicker way than to dry up the reward pool.  So go flag him. Not because he deserves it, but because you love Steemit.

Its a troublesome quandry....

Unfortunately, we have come to "The Trees" problem. (a Rush reference)

Do we use the hatchet, axe and saw against an oak tree to ensure the maples get more sunlight?

It SEEMS that Haejin's growth is organic in nature and is possibly deserved

While pruning Haejin's profits may solve the rewards pool "problem" and the forest of Steem may seem healthier, there may be another option which could be more beneficial and less damaging.

I would advocate such voting power to be used to grow the forest instead of hacking away at the parts of it we find to be not of our liking.

Haejin MAY deserve what he has comming, but all things have their ebb and flow. Haejin too will pass, like all things.

A more positive approach may be to use such votes to boost another user, growing the forest.
