If you're like most people, you are probably enjoying the weekend right now, because when the weekend is over you have to go back to this dreaded thing we call a job. And like most people this means that you have to routinely do a subset of tasks within a fixed period of time, better known as the 9 to 5 life. And if that's not you, then you are a lucky bastard or unemployed, either way don't click away from this post. :)

We've been taught by previous generations that having that steady job with stable income for years until retirement is your best bet. But that generation came from a different time, and while their advice may have been true for them, the landscape has completely changed. At this day and age this magical thing we call money is losing its value faster and faster, due to inflation and all sorts of mysterious economic secrecies that I won't get into right now.

The plan to save your money, put it in the bank and earn interest on it until you retire and have a nice sum at the "end", is a plan that nowadays fails before it even starts. Because of that devaluation and other mythical financial stuff of course. This is even more the case in countries where the big currencies like USD, GBP and EURO aren't native, like in my own country Suriname. Local currency tends to lose its value which also lowers its USD value. Take for example Venezuela where people are now earning millions of pesos in monthly salary, but then it calculates to maybe 7 US dollars. I've seen local people here who had saved up for retirement and eventually their monthly retirement payout could barely buy them an egg. Plans ruined.

This is why today, right now, the trick is not to save as much as possible. The trick is in fact to let your money work for you. If more than 50% of your net worth is in the bank, you're doing something wrong. Buy assets with your money, Things that generate you more money. Or buy things that are less affected by inflation like land and real estate. Or crypto. :) But most of you already knew that last one.

The picture above is one I took almost 2 years ago. I parked my car somewhere down town and opened the door, and right next to me I saw this coin pressed into the road. Five cents to be exact. Something that would have bought my parents at least bread, completely worthless and ignored in the pavement. I thought that this clearly symbolized how the value of money can rapidly change over time.

I'll end on this tune by Alborosie which I just found today. A clear and sound "money is the root of all evil" resonated nicely among the lyrics, along with a chill beat. So don't be focused on the money. The money is just a tool to use to gain towards your ultimate goals and dreams in life.
