Dearest Diary, 

So my plan has come together nicely. At least so far.

I have yet to be discovered by either Father or Mother, so have not had to explain my actions, my plan or the reasons behind such measures. I do envy those people in the future I have seen, and the freedom they have when compared to the restrictions society puts on us at this time.

Anyway, diary, I know that it is safe to share these things with you. But you alone. I must not divulge my plans to anyone for fear of being castigated most severely by my family. I understand they love me and wish to see me kept from harm, but I have thought this through and decided the consequences are worth my peace of mind; and I can continue to serve the Company and my fellow team members as best I can.

If anyone should happen to read these diary entries in the future—the much distant future, I hope—then they may wonder “What is all this fuss about?”, but seen in context it was a bold step I took to break out of what is socially acceptable for a lady such as myself—indeed any lady, as a matter of fact.

Here is the secret—I have recently, and in great secret, procured the services of a master swordsman! He will teach me not only the art of swordplay, but also fencing, and dagger work—which means combat up-close. The current use of pistols by cut-throats and thieves may have been a more natural choice of weapon to learn, but in truth I found I could not stomach the thought of using such a device as it is more of an offensive strategy than a defensive one. I have also grown to enjoy the strenuous work-outs which the sword training demands of me.

There! What do you think of that? And that is not even the end of my confession, if you please. I have one more delicious secret to reveal, and I am most pleased with myself for this little *pièce de résistance*. My teacher does not know who I am! Nor does he suspect that I am anything but simply another of his male pupils from good society. I sometimes pinch myself to make certain I am not simply dreaming this part of my life.
