There's an interesting disconnect between people that I've began to see; now, more so than at any point in my past and I'll tell you why.

I grew up in what Americans would call a white trailer trash area. To people in the UK they'll know it as an 80's Thatcherseque Council Estate shithole. I was introduced to all the drug dealers when I was in my teens because that's when they like to get you; young and naive and in search of something to take those intense emotions that puberty brings along with it. I've known people that own guns, even although guns are a major no-no over here, and I've known people that would slit your throat and not even think twice. Yeah, my youth was a perfect entrance to the underworld.

Luckily my Dad saw what was happening and pulled me out.

My dating years weren't any better. You could call me a regular know nothing when it came to women and sex, I didn't know how to woo them, and if I was luckily enough to have a girlfriend then I wasn't able to keep her. I just didn't know enough about women -- and it frustrated me because my mum raised me to treat women the way they should be treated.

I married eventually, and we've been together for 11 years. A lot of people say she is the lucky one, but it's actually me that's the lucky one for more reasons than one.

I married into middle class. My wife is middle class and most of her family are upper-middle. The culture was definitely a shock to me. Nevertheless their family was welcoming and have took me in as one of their own and I can't be more thankful for it. And through watching them I've grown. Of course I still have my old habits that make my wife cringe, but alas, I'm not going to change what makes me, me.

Through my class manouvre I've watched and learned and seen some amazing things. I took myself to college & university; took on new and exciting work positions, and before I left to find my fortune online I ended up managing an entire section of the charity I was working for. We helped change people's lives through a lovely combination of giving them a place to belong and drawing out their creativity. And changed lives we did, by the bucketload.

So I've seen things from the bottom, and I've also seen things from climbing to the top - and it's been an inspirational journey. One thing that really brought the disconnect to light was my venture on steemit. There was a time on Steemit where everyone was earning a fair bit, me included. And I got to see what it was like to earn a pile of money for writing. But eventually things dry up and upvotes that were worth anything were much harder to come by.

And we all blamed the whales. You should be up-voting us we screamed. It's not fair!! but then we also forget that it's because of their large investment that we were able to earn good money. Some of us (like me) came to this platform with 0 investment and cried when it didn't go our way; I didn't see it at first, but we were essentially complaining that people weren't sharing their well earned money with us.

I delved a bit into this psychology and put myself in the situation of what I would do if I had a million pounds invested in this place -- should I be made to feel guilty over the decisions I make with my own money? It struck a chord with me -- who am I to tell other people what to do with their money? Would I like it if someone was dictating what I should do with the little investment that I had? Probably not. I'd perhaps be a bit frustrated too.

So I stopped complaining and started investing in the stuff that I liked. I'm also powering up everything I have here too.

And yet we see this in the real world too; the government has really worked people into a dependency over them. When wages stagnate and prices go through the roof like they are in the UK (and they have done for 10 years) they march and stomp and create havoc at government buildings, but very few think to take what they have and make something new from it. Start up a business, or create some new scheme, or put some money away. If things don't go your way then find out where you're going wrong and try and fix it!

Actions speak louder than words

But then it's not their fault -- and I see this from some people that don't understand how poor people are either. Some of my friends, admittedly told me that some people are the way they are because they chose to be like that. I get what they're saying but no-one chooses to be a drug addict and always desperately looking for spare money. They just aren't ready for the responsibility mindset yet. They have trauma to overcome first -- if they ever get to that stage.

Overcoming trauma isn't like striking a line under a new day and then saying this is a new day! There's severe boundaries to overcome first. Abusive childhoods, neglectful parents -- they first need to feel like they belong somewhere, have a goal, and feel respected before they can even get to the responsibility mindset and start achieving.

For me understanding is key! Try to understand everything and everyone -- and it'll make you a better person.

The problem with steem is not that whales won't vote for us, its that Steem is not designed to reward high quality content. Just like in the real world, where for the last 40 years or so, all the gains have gone to the top (capital), steem is basically an oligarchy. Many (but not all) large steem holders are simply gaming the system to reward themselves and their friends. As to people marching and complaining to the government, the truth is that we should all be doing that, because most governments (certainly the UK, EU, and US) have created this system by supporting neoliberal economic policies that are designed to create inequality and make it difficult to actually do better. Suggest watching this and a few of Mark Blyth's other videos: https://youtu.be/BsqGITb0W4A

I disagree my friend. If there wasn't inequality then there would be zero opportunity. The closer we move to equal outcomes, the closer we move to real oligarchy and totalitarianism. You should do an experiment. Start your own coin and give an almost equal amount to everyone and record the results, see what happens! The real problem isn't people with money, the real problem is our mindsets; which I agree to an extent that we're being largely passified. We've been protesting and screaming for a good 6-7 years now. Has it done any good?
