We Might Just Be Focusing On The Wrong Only Centralized Metaverse

Facebook announced its rebranding from Facebook to Meta and we lost our cool because we felt that Facebook is about to centralize another big innovation in human history. It’s no doubt that Facebook is currently the king of Web 2.0 social media as its own the most used social media platforms. So seeing it cunningly change it’s name to meta felt like a corny way of trying to centralize the metaverse. We just hope that sometimes in the future Facebook won’t claim to invent the word “Metaverse”.

While the whole world was focusing on bashing Facebook, other brands were silently dropping hints of joining the metaverse. We have the Budweiser brand release it’s budverse can and gave an impression that it’s interested in the metaverse. We saw the Pepsi brand drop some mic drop NFTs and we saw the Nike brand announce its interest in the metaverse, probably the fashion aspect. 


Yeah Facebook is making it seem like they want to claim the name “Metaverse” to the extent that the name was taken from someone who had that as their name on Instagram first. Not cool, but we should also pay close attention to Nike who just bought a virtual shoe company called RTFKT. The company is supposed to be decentralized and supposed to be a step close to Web 3.0 unfortunately, with the right price they were bought off by NIKE. 

Now lots of brands are seeming to be interested in the metaverse which is really nice and cool, but I hope we don’t get lost in the hype and excitement that brands are partaking in crypto and metaverse and watch these brands centralize the metaverse. Well being that metaverse is vast and is something that is going to be on a blockchain, varieties will be a great option. I only wish that we are knowledgeable and wise enough to be able to detect centralization from decentralization. Just like the world ignored governments that wanted to create their own blockchain and cryptocurrency to make people leave bitcoin and join theirs. But fortunately people knew better than that, blockchain and bitcoin are different. 

Brands shouldn’t be building their own metaverse, they should be joining other decentralized metaverse. This way we know that the metaverse is truly permission less and not controlled by some big entity. Everyone is supposed to have equal opportunities not special opportunity because they are “big brands”. 

At first it was weird seeing brands use the crypto lingos or do some of the things that we find cool in crypto community. For instance it felt weird seeing Budweiser change its name to beer.eth, using an ENS(Ethereum Naming Service), we just hope they don’t make using this cool stuff cliché.
