Aromatherapy: (Part #2, blending, Using and Storing Essential Oils.)

The art of aromatherapy is a huge topic to dissect. If you missed my first post related to the basics of this subject matter you can find it here:

https://steemit.com/til/@rebeccaryan/it-smells-aromatherapy-dosed-by-the-drop-and-blended-with-essential-oils-for-specific-health-affects-part-1-the-basics

It will bring you up to speed on what essential oils are, how they are made, what the differences are and how to re-set your sense of smell. This is important so that you can continue to tell the difference between essential oils as you progress on a sensory journey, in order to select the best oils for yourself or someone else.

In this post, I will explain how the oils can be used, how they can be blended to create a complex custom formula and how the oils should be cared for to properly store them, long term.

As I alluded to in my earlier post, essential oils can be expensive and it is wise to do some research about the oils you are interested in before actually purchasing them. Like everything on this planet, not all essential oil companies are ethical and often their pricing is overstated for the quality and rarity of the oils, they have on offer.

One of the more common essential oils that is most readily available is made directly from the peel of oranges.

Oranges are abundantly grown in many countries, yet orange essential oil pricing can vary widely from $6 for a 10 ml bottle of oil to $24 for the same size bottle from a Direct Sales company. This type of company educates their consumers through "consultants with minimal training" during home based aromatherapy parties. In this scenario, you are paying for the service of being educated in the intimacy of a friend's living-room. Usually by someone with only the training that has been provided within the literature that the company has provided. Nothing more.

In my opinion, this falls nicely under the category of: "They're not actually stealing your money from you, if you willing give it to them for a product that is over priced."

My first rule when it comes to the selection and purchasing of essential oils is:

Buyer Beware. Do your own due diligence first, use your own nose to smell the oil and if you really love it, then make your purchase.

Each essential oil is known for the different affects that it can create within the body. Some oils are very sedative, while others are very energizing. A person might have difficulty calming their mind before they go to sleep at night. Lavender is a wonderfully sedating oil that actually calms the nervous system. Orange and most citrus based oils are very energizing and uplifting. They produce the opposite affect on the body's nervous system and would be a group of oils that I would generally try to avoid, just before sleep. However, they would be great to invigorate and wake someone up with, if used in a body wash or body soap during an early morning shower, where a person wants to be refreshed and alert.

When blending oils, you generally want to use a small group of 4 to 5 oils that produce similar affects in the body and don't contradict one another.

(This is a Holiday Blend of oils that contains: Cedar-wood, frankincense, cinnamon, clove, orange and mandarin essential oils. It is complex and often a person is left with being able to discern that it has clove in it, because clove is one of its base notes.)

There are lots of good aromatherapy reference books for sale or you can do your research on-line about what each oil is and what affects they are known to create within the human body, for free.

Generally, when creating an essential oil blend as opposed to using only one essential oil at a time, you want to create a blend of oils that will have a base note, a middle note and a top note.

(Here are 3 very different, complex, essential oil blends that I make for my shop. Each one contains approximately 6 different essential oils each. They are highly concentrated and often only 3 drops are needed to infuse a massage oil or moisturizer for a customized application.)

Base notes are heavy oils in aroma and weight. They are often derived from tree resins and they last the longest and linger in their aroma overtime. If you use too many drops of base note oils in your blend, those oils will overpower your middle note oils and your top note oils. The art of blending oils is in learning to respect the strengths and lasting power of the base notes, middle notes and top notes.

Middle note oils are the most common type of essential oils. They tend to be very balanced, warm and relatively soft. They develop over time and are not normally discernible instantly. They do not hit you in the face like a heavier base note does.

Top note oils generally are the most volatile. They usually are discernible very quickly but then disappear fairly instantly. They are the lightest oils and are fresh and energizing. Most citrus oils are considered to be top notes in their characteristics.

Essential oils, more often than not, need to be blended into a carrier medium of some sort. It is easier to blend them into another oil. There are only a few oils that can safely be used directly on the skin without being blended into a carrier, of some sort.

In a blend, I would use 30 ml of carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil or an extra light olive oil. Look for a carrier oil that is almost completely aroma-free itself, because you want your finished blend to showcase the chosen oils and not the carrier oil.

To 30 ml of carrier oil, I would blend approximately 4 drops of all my selected top notes, 5 drops of all my selected middle notes and 6 drops of all my selected base notes.

Once in its blending bottle or beaker, I would roll this mixture between the palms of my hands to blend the oils through the carrier oil gently. I like to respect the fragile nature of some of the lighter oils which can become damaged molecularly by vigorous shaking. This blend can be tested through inhaling the aroma, then tweaked if you require it to be stronger, then it can be applied with a light hand to the surface area of the body's skin.

It will be the lymphatics systems job to carrier the essential oil into the body through the skin and through the body's sense of smell via its olfactory bulb in the brain.

Many people own special apparatuses that are used for diffusing essential oils directly into the air.

In this type of inhalation method, it is only through olfaction or through the sense of smell that the oils are taken into the body and then create their affects on the person's system.

This is one of the most cost-effective and quickest ways to regularly take advantage of what essential oils can offer. Multiple people can be treated at once by the use of very few drops.

This particular model costs under $20 and will easily infuse a small bedroom or a bathroom, plus it lights up so it can do double duty as a night light.

Here's a photo showing the vessel that will either hold essential oil infused soy wax cubes or you can fill it 3/4 full with tap water and then add 7 drops of the essential oil or oils of your choice.

You can see that the whole unit just plugs into a standard outlet. There is a small light bulb that gently heats the water or the wax which releases the essential oils into the air of the room, once it is switched on.

Here's another popular style that also lights up with a light bulb, once it's plugged in.

I have taken the top vessel, that can also hold either essential oil infused wax cubes or water off. This reveals the small light bulb inside it.

This one is an ultra-sonic cool mist diffuser. You fill it up with tap water and add 10 drops of your favourite blend or single essential oil. It will infuse 800 square feet easily with the aroma of your choice. This is a great option for anyone with pets or small children, because it's completely contained and it doesn't generate any heat. These models generally cost between $50 to $100.

This model is commercial grade and pipes aroma through the entire duct-work of a house or commercial facility. I have developed my own signature blend for my shop and we have this one running all the time. It was an investment coming in at over $1000, but is worth it because it ties the experiences that we provide through aroma, straight to memory. It's providing healing on a true energetic level. I typically work with people who are quite unwell and I need to pull out every stop I can to help them in their recovery journey.

As I have mentioned, essential oils are extremely potent. They can also be very fragile which seems contradictory, but really that just translates into learning to respecting them.

Essential oils will eat straight through plastic and rubber and some essential oils are stronger than others in this arena.

They should be stored in brown or cobalt blue glass bottles, out of direct sunlight and away from high levels of heat in order for them to remain active. I store mine in a cupboard that doesn't get exposed to excessive heat or humidity.

I welcome your comments and invite you to follow me on my journey.

~ Rebecca Ryan

Thanks for sharing! Love essential oils. Using steam baths with eucalyptus right now for my cold and my most favorite is ylang-ylang! Just love the smell of it. It's my go-to essential oil for massages! As for the diffuser, love the deep and calming aroma of sandalwood. And for bruises, cuts, clear skin tea trea is my fav.

@sunscape ·
I have to put an article together yet from start to finish. Yesterday I did a quick post on packaging a Calendula / Oatmeal bath soak. I am so busy editing and making labels for the soaps as I just opened the etsy store and am listing products as I edit. That is quite the task. This is as far as I have gotten in a few days if you would like to check it out. http://tinyurl.com/gmuhggz
I almost used holistic and bathandbeauty as a tag as well. So when I post I will include them to start to establish the tag for us. Sound about right?
