Looove the painting. 
I always prefer to view an artwork without any background showing, I find the background can be distracting. As for the second question, being caught in habits is by far the worst, they are extremely hard to break and can hold you back.

Both of them are stunning for different reasons. I was going to say the first one was better, but then I took a proper look at the second and it really grabs you in a way that the first can't because the effect of the picture is diluted by the setting. So, sorry to be not much help, but hopefully still a compliment. :)
