Art and Creativity: Doing What You "Have to" vs. Doing What You "Want to"
<html>
<p>When we work in artistic and creative fields, how often do we get to "<em>do what we want?</em>" How often does it feel more like we are stuck at "<em>doing what we HAVE to?</em>"</p>
<p>One of our "regular" artists was visiting the gallery yesterday, checking up on what had been sold and what we had available. In addition to showing her work at several galleries, she also spends a good bit of her time "on the road," doing juried art shows around our region.</p>
<p>As part of our talk, she allowed as how she was tired and fed up with "<em>making ten dollar trinkets</em>" because that's what people had been buying <em>(the same was true here at the gallery)</em> at the shows she'd been attending.</p>
<h2><em>"Have To" vs. "Want To"</em></h2>
<p>
<div class="pull-right">
<p><img src="https://i.imgur.com/eCKWYRy.jpg" alt="MandalaStone" /><br />
<em>Painted mandala stone...</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>Like many artists, hear heart was in making her elaborate large originals... but she felt pressured by the fact that the buyers market for them is very limited. She felt like she had gotten stuck doing "quick little pieces" simply in the interest of earning an income... and this was somehow invading her personal freedom of expression.</p>
<p>I can appreciate her feelings quite well, as I experience something similar with my own work...&nbsp;</p>
<p>We live in a tourist town and whereas I would love to spend my time painting my larger most colorful and intricate pieces... I also realize that the reason we can pay our monthly rent at the gallery is often because we sell dozens of small "souvenir size" painted stones... for $4 to $10 a piece.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They are quick and easy to make, they sell... and it becomes very boring, after a while.</p>
<h2><em>A Trade-Off?</em></h2>
<p>On the other hand, is it really such a <em>bad</em> thing?</p>
<p>
<div class="pull-left">
<p><img src="https://i.imgur.com/QfGPqdG.jpg" alt="Cactus" /><br />
<em>A spiky topic...?</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>As our discussion continued, I pointed out that-- through our willingness to turn out these "ten dollar trinkets"-- we were, essentially, also buying our way to being able to work with our creativity most of the time... as compared to those who have to have full time jobs in order to pay for making art.</p>
<p>So-- at least from my vantage point-- making "<em>ten dollar trinkets</em>" might be a bit tedious, but it's not exactly what some would consider "<em>selling out</em>," because we still get to derive more than half our incomes from art... not from being waiters at a restaurant, or selling books in a shop.</p>
<p>Maybe all forms of creative endeavors have such tradeoffs. I can think of writers who just <em>"want to be poets"</em> but can't... so they turn out short stories and pulp fiction to help fund their poetry. Perhaps the same is true for musicians... they have to play "<em>popular</em>" songs to fund being able to spend time with the experimental stuff.</p>
<p>Of course, sometimes you can build success over time, so you end up only doing precisely what you want. And once in a <em>GREAT</em> while, what you have is <em>exactly</em> what people want... and you have instant success!</p>
<p><strong>DISCUSSION: Do you experience such tradeoffs with your creativity? How do you balance things?&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>Thank you for reading! Red Dragonfly is a proud member of the <a href="https://steemit.com/@sndbox"><strong><a href="/@sndbox">@sndbox</a> </strong></a>creative initiative.</p>

Heey @reddragonfly !

I think your aticle is spot on. I think whatever we do, you must be ready for some trade-offs at some point.
I love concepting stuff and characters but I know at some point I will have to render them and make them beautiful and I really. Don't like it. But it's part of the job and part of what translate them from an idea to an actual "living" character in a game, and the feeling in the end is definitely worth it.

Also as @Shello points out it is a balance between the things you like and what you have to do. It also depends of your end vision I reckon as it will drive you out from the difficult part. And at the end, we can learn to love these parts as they can give all the magic to other people (the client, the gamer etc.) like your 4$ stones, they can bring joy and emotions to the person purchasing it and I think as artists, we can strive from doing some good here while managing to pay our bills.

Last point, I think as well, by doing the things we want to do, a bit everyday, in the end we will manage to limit the tradeoff and find the niche of people liking our work. Internet teaches us there is a market for everything, so everyone can do more of "what they want' and less of 'what they have to' (Sorry I am rambling a bit, i hope it makes sense ^^")

Have a good day ! Cheers

Thanks for sharing your perspective @alcy, always appreciate your insights.

I have definitely gotten better at embracing the somewhat tedious parts because I know they are part of what makes it possible to do amazing and creative things... there's a balance; a tradeoff as you said.

With respect to art, there is definitely also a reward in knowing that someone leaves happy and intrigued by my work, even when they are spending $5. After all, they did just cast a "vote" that something I made was interesting enough that they wanted to take it home. And that's a pretty beautiful thing!

I know this from personal experience as well. Worked in IT for 5 years, was making good money but my creativity was just determent to get out. Quit my job and now I am trying to start something of my own. If you are interested you can check out my site <a href="http://gabchik.com">gabchik.com</a> to see my idea. I will try to do what I want instead of what I have to by passing on inspiring information through art. I am also doing tattoos and even if the idea behind the site does not allow me to make a living, at least I would have made a name for myself before I start working in a tattoo studio. Hopefully then people will come for things that inspire me, instead of the usual scull, clock, rose tatto. Wish me luck!

Well, you caught my eye when I saw sacred geometry patterns, which also inspire me and is behind much of my art.

I have always been a writer and that's what I wanted to focus on... like you, I spent some years in IT as a Technical Writer but discovered that I was basically just a "hired hand" and whereas I was *writing* none of it was my own creativity. So I stopped.

In general, it is said that it takes about five years of applied effort to become an "expert" at anything... and that includes the creative. So whereas your project for the moment may just be to get your name out there, who is to say that it will not develop into a "living" if you stick to it for five years or more? Best of luck and much success to you!

Good evening @reddragongly,

This is really good thoughts, I was always told that in order to get to do what we want to do, we first do the things we have to do. I like to try to find a balance, but lean more towards responsibility. I have school that I prioritize over everything else, I repair laptops, and I blog.

My finances are not the best, but I don't have to go to a 9-5, so there are trades. When I work on anything creative, I have to be prepared to lose days, sometimes weeks in the process if it's something I really want to do. Most of the time I can't do that, so I try to work on smaller things to still be able to enjoy although I can't go all out.

I don't really think it's selling out as much as it is filling the demand. As long as you eventually get to do the things you want, I don't think there's too much harm in it.

<3 shello

Thanks @shello-- I was raised with very similar values; *"do your duties first"* and there was really *no question* about doing the fun stuff first. On the other hand, in our current world it feels like more and more people feel "entitled" to simply do what they *want,* often to discover that the results they end up with are *not* what they want.

Specifically when trying to earn a living (or most of one) from something like art, music, writing, etc, I find it almost inevitable that I have to be willing to do "drudgery" work in order to (financially) make iot possible for me to do the other more interesting things.

No problem @reddragonfly,

You aren't wrong about people being brought up into a world built on "instant gratification" attitudes. If we do the things we want now, everything else feels like it would come apart from the seams later on. Although we would all want to be able to do the fun things first, I feel as getting through the "drudgery" you speak of, only gives us more time to think of how, and plan in greater detail the things we do want to achieve.

A guy who doesn't put in the work lazes around and becomes bored, while someone who always works, plans fun activities, and makes the best possible use of his free time c:

Oh gosh this is a hot button.
Yes.
I have attempted to find some sort of balance for the last 30 years of my own art business, sometimes finding it, and other times not. I am a glass and stone sculptor, so I prefer to do the highly meaningful personal creative work that is large and expensive. It may resonate with a buyer, and then it may tour around for a while through various galleries. Or sit in inventory. For cash flow I have been doing custom projects for clients for years, and yes, giftwear. Last year I officially axed giftwear off the list for my own sanity. It will cost me financially, but the upshot is that I am deliberately choosing to do work that is more important to me. And it will be seen and sold, too. Otherwise I was not able to get the time to create and produce the really good stuff, and I felt the inner compromise was costing me something else somehow. Aside from that, I also run a gallery that gets scores of tourists through it wanting the cheap stuff. So annoying. We pay the rent by offering classes and workshops, as well as art sales... not as much by selling small things. It's such a typical juggling act!

Thanks for the comment @stonemaiden... sounds like you're in a similar boat-- artist, creative, gallery owner... trying to balance it all.

Our gallery is in a touristy area, as well... and often the whole year can hang on having enough "tourist trinkets" to send out the door during the season, which runs May through September here. Sometimes it does stretch me a bit thin... we also do workshops, but those are all in the wintertime when folks are more interested in doing "inside things." The cheap stuff does pay the rent here... if we can get almost everyone out the door having spent $5-10 on some cards and or a small trinket... well, that's a victory. And it pays for the rest.
