Art and Creativity: Is Anything Ever Really NEW?

<p>I have been enjoying a day mostly away from the technology-- no Internet, no web surfing, no blogging, answered only a couple of emails.</p>
<p>Instead, I spent some time going through boxes in my office closet, and looking at old art auction catalogues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's funny how we think things around us are new and yet they are often really just a "remake" of a trend that was around a while back.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A friend of mine has a very stylish and hipster apartment, and yet... with a little bit of research... it's fairly clear that his "new" stylings are basically a regurgitation of 1960's "<em>Space Age Bachelor Pad</em>" styles... with a few bits and pieces added to make it look slightly different.</p>
<h2><em>Everything is New - Nothing is New</em></h2>
<p>When I think about Art, the underlying styles in artistic creation seem to "<em>cycle</em>" as well. What's "<em>old news</em>" today becomes tomorrow's "<em>trendy.</em>"&nbsp;</p>
<p>Young artists come into our gallery and show us their work... and say "<em>this is new!</em>" with great enthusiasm, and whereas that is somewhat true, it's also clear that what they are merely repeating and adjusting something from the past.</p>
<p>Ultimately, I suppose there is no such thing as truly new and original.</p>
<p>Sometimes makes me wonder if the whole idea of things like blockchains (which we consider "new") are merely a 21st century re-do of the old relational databases we used to create on the IBM-360 in the basement at the University of Texas.</p>
<h2><em>Art and Timelessness</em></h2>
<p>My father-- although more of an art<em> appreciator</em> than an <em>artist</em>-- was a big proponent of the idea of <em>timelessness</em> in art.</p>

<p>For him, "<em>good art</em>" stood out by itself without having any attachment to the time period in which it was created. It simply was there, and evoked something in the viewer... and the thought "<em>that's very 1950's</em>" would never enter the viewer's mind.</p>
<p>Some would argue that timeless art "takes fewer risks" because it doesn't owe its impact to being part of some current social, political or other statement... and maybe that's true... I don't know, for sure.</p>
<p>What I did notice-- in looking through many years' worth of auction catalogues from Sotheby's and Christie's was that the more timeless art always seemed to sell and fetch handsome prices. Of course, there are those who would say that keeping an eye on the dollars is basically "selling out." But that's not the point here... because these are posthumous dollars to most of these artists... most of whom are long gone.</p>

I think that it's almost impossible to come up with something that is unique in the pure sense of the word. We are social beings, and thus our tastes and perspectives are influenced by those we interact with. Whether in the fields of art, technology, science or philosophy, new stuff is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. 😊

That's an excellent observation. Most of our progress as a species tends to have been the result of small increments and small changes to existing "things." Quantum leaps tend to be quite rare.
