Art and Creativity: The Changing Face of Consumer Behavior

<p>We live in an ever-changing world. That applies whether we're dealing with technology, social trends, art or even our personal lives.</p>
<p>In the past, I have occasionally written about how the way we market and sell art has changed over the years — and we have done our best to adapt to market conditions.</p>
<h2><em>How People Shop</em></h2>
<p>People's shopping habits are changing.</p>

<p>One of the things we increasingly observe at the Red Dragonfly Gallery is a person coming in, taking their time to look around... then snapping a dozen photos with their cell phone camera... and leaving.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Based on a little gentle inquiry over the past 18 months, there are a number of different reasons.</p>
<p>In the old days, artists used to get all worked up over photos being taken, thinking that people were photographing in order to copy their work and go home to either print it out, or try to "paint one like it." Interestingly enough, that's rarely the case.</p>
<p>In many cases, the photos simply represent a sort of "<em>souvenir:</em>" A way to have a "<em>Remember that cool gallery in Port Townsend?</em>" touchpoint saved on their phone. Digital photography has not only changed <em>how often</em> we photograph, but also what we deem "<em>worthy</em>" of a photo. Pretty much everything is "<em>save worthy</em>," these days.</p>

<p>Another major group are people who take pictures — and usually jot down the artist's name — in order to "<em>go home and find it online.</em>" The unspoken part of that equation, of course, is "<em>... for less.</em>"</p>
<p>Whereas that doesn't necessarily make a lot of <em>sense</em> with art — especially given that most works are one-of-a-kind — the world has been conditioned to believe that "<em>things are always cheaper online.</em>"</p>
<p>A smaller group are practicing their version of "<em>artist support,</em>" applying the assumption that by trying to order the item <em>directly from the artist</em> — instead of buying at a gallery — they will not only <em>save</em> money, they will be giving <em>more</em> money to the artist by avoiding the gallery commission.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><em>All of Retail Selling is Changing</em></h2>
<p>The changes we experience in the microcosm that is our small gallery is just a reflection of how the greater world is changing.</p>

<p>Long-time institutions in our landscape — such as the shopping mall — are slowly vanishing because of changes in consumer behavior; the reality of "<em>shopping</em>" as something that involves face-to-face contact is slowly fading and giving way to something else.</p>
<p>How will art be <em>"sold,</em>" in the future? Will it even be "<em>sold?</em>"&nbsp;</p>
<p>I expect we'll eventually see a new generation of digital artists and digital media emerge, in which the artists' work is a "<em>full immersion experience</em>" that art fans perhaps <em>"rent"</em> access to, as a kind of app for your home. Perhaps the art, itself, doesn't not even <em>exist</em>, except as pixels.</p>
<p>How far out that will be is hard to tell, but I can't imagine it will be much more than a couple of decades.</p>
<p>In the meantime, we will continue to help digital artists convert their work to greeting card formats, which we will sell as "<em>souvenirs</em>" to visitors of The Red Dragonfly!</p>
