¡Hola, creativos del cómic y el manga!

Últimamente ando practicando mucho el estilo de anime retro y eso me lleva a mezclar lo mejor de lo tradicional y lo digital en mis ilustraciones, y la experiencia ha sido interesante. ¿Por qué quedarnos con solo lápiz y papel o limitarnos a la tableta gráfica, si podemos obtener texturas, matices y efectos únicos al combinarlos? Les comparto cómo ha sido mi proceso, para que lo prueben y cuenten qué tal les va.

Primero, retomar el gusto por el papel. No hay nada como sentir la punta del lápiz rozando la superficie, dejar que la mano fluya y capturar esa energía del personaje. Yo suelo usar una hoja de Bristol o cartulina resistente, lápiz HB o lápiz bicolor (azul-rojo) para los bosquejos y a veces me animo con plumilla o pincel de acuarela para definir algunos trazos gruesos. Aquí no se trata de hacer todo perfecto, sino de atrapar la esencia que hace único nuestro dibujo.

Cuando ya tengo el boceto principal, llega la parte tecnológica: escanear o tomar una buena foto. Lo subo a mi programa favorito (puede ser Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop o SAI) y ajusto los niveles para que el fondo quede bien claro y las líneas destaquen por sí mismas. Aquí aprovecho para organizar mis capas: una para la línea base, otra para detalles y una extra para borradores o anotaciones. Esa estructura me ayuda a no perderme cuando el archivo empieza a crecer. También lo organizo por carpetas.

Luego empiezo a trabajar la “tinta digital”. Lo bueno es que, aunque imitamos los pinceles tradicionales, podemos jugar con presiones, texturas y opacidades imposibles de lograr con un solo pincel de verdad. A veces uso brochitas secas digitales para darle un toque áspero a las sombras, otras opto por puntillismo o trazos que imitan plumilla. El truco está en mantener esas imperfecciones que le dan vida y carácter al dibujo, sin que parezca demasiado prolijo.

Llegado el momento del color, es donde todo se vuelve un terreno de experimentación. Bloqueo mi capa de líneas (¡porque uno puede terminar trabajando el color en la capa de líneas y se vuelve un caos!) y creo otras para color plano, sombras y luces. Si busco un estilo nostálgico, elijo paletas limitadas y trabajo con pinceladas suaves. Pero si quiero un impacto fuerte, uso degradados, brillos intensos y efectos de neón. Lo que nunca falta es una capa extra para partículas: chispas, motas de polvo o destellos que marcan la diferencia.

A veces me sorprendo cuando agrego texturas digitales: restos de papel arrugado, salpicaduras de tinta o grano de película antigua. Al ponerlas en modo “multiplicar” o “superponer”, el dibujo automáticamente adquiere un aspecto más cálido y orgánico. Y si en algún punto siento que el contraste se me va de las manos, unas curvas de color o un ajuste selectivo de tono y saturación bajan el brillo justo donde quiero.

Lo mejor de todo esto es que, mientras juego con capas y pinceles, sigo disfrutando el tacto del papel y la espontaneidad del trazo manual. ¿La parte más complicada? A veces me pierdo en mil capas y pinceles, pero tengo el hábito de nombrar cada una y guardar versiones tentativas. Así, si una prueba de color o un efecto no me convence, siempre puedo volver atrás sin perder horas de trabajo.

Un ejercicio que me funcionó muy bien para enganchar con esta fusión fue hacer tres sketches rápidos: uno 100 % tradicional, otro 100 % digital y un tercero hibridado, con boceto a mano y acabado en tableta. Cuando comparé resultados, descubrí qué detalles me gustaban de cada método: la calidez y textura de lo artesanal y la flexibilidad y versatilidad de lo digital. Esa comparación me abrió los ojos a posibilidades que ni había imaginado.

Hello, comic and manga creatives!

Lately I’ve been practicing a lot of retro anime style, which has led me to blend the best of traditional and digital techniques in my illustrations—and the experience has been fascinating. Why stick with just pencil and paper or limit yourself to a graphics tablet when you can achieve unique textures, nuances, and effects by combining them? Here’s how my process has gone, so you can try it out and let me know how it works for you.

First, reconnect with the love of paper. There’s nothing like feeling the pencil’s tip grazing the surface, letting your hand flow, and capturing that raw energy of the character. I usually use Bristol board or sturdy cardstock, an HB pencil or a dual-color (blue-red) pencil for sketches, and sometimes I get bold with a dip pen or watercolor brush to define some thicker lines. The goal here isn’t perfection but to trap the essence that makes our drawing unique.

Once I have the main sketch, it’s time for the tech side: scan it or take a high-quality photo. I open it in my favorite software (Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop, or SAI) and adjust the levels so the background is perfectly clean and the lines stand out on their own. Then I organize my layers: one for the base line art, another for details, and an extra one for drafts or notes. That structure keeps me from getting lost once the file starts to grow. I also group related layers into folders.

Next comes the “digital inking.” The great thing is that, while we’re emulating traditional brushes, we can play with pressure sensitivity, textures, and opacities that you just can’t achieve with a single real brush. Sometimes I use dry digital brushes to give shadows a rough touch; other times I opt for stippling or strokes that mimic a dip pen. The trick is to preserve those little imperfections that give life and character to the drawing without making it look too tidy.

When it’s time for color, everything becomes a playground for experimentation. I lock my line-art layer (because it’s way too easy to accidentally paint over it and create chaos!) and then create separate layers for flat color, shadows, and highlights. For a nostalgic look, I choose a limited palette and work with soft, painterly strokes. If I want a bold impact, I use gradients, intense glow effects, and neon accents. I always include an extra layer for particles: sparks, dust motes, or glints that really make a difference.

I sometimes surprise myself by adding digital textures: crumpled paper remnants, ink splatters, or old film grain. Setting them to “Multiply” or “Overlay” instantly gives the illustration a warmer, more organic feel. And if a contrast drifts too far, a quick curves adjustment or a selective hue/saturation tweak cuts the brightness right where I need it.

The best part of all this is that, while I’m juggling layers and brushes, I still get to enjoy the tactile feel of paper and the spontaneity of a manual stroke. What’s the hardest part? I sometimes get lost among hundreds of layers and brush presets, but I make it a habit to name each one and save tentative versions. That way, if a color test or an effect doesn’t convince me, I can always roll back without losing hours of work.

One exercise that worked wonders for me was doing three quick sketches: one 100% traditional, one 100% digital, and a hybrid version with a hand-drawn sketch finished on a tablet. Comparing the results showed me which details I loved from each method the warmth and texture of the handmade work versus the flexibility and versatility of digital tools. That comparison opened my eyes to possibilities I hadn’t even imagined.
