Últimamente he estado pensando mucho en cómo contar historias que no sigan el orden clásico de principio, medio y fin. Ya sabes, esas historias que saltan en el tiempo y te hacen armar el rompecabezas mientras lees. La narrativa no lineal es justo eso, y si estás creando cómics o manga, puede ser un recurso muy poderoso para darle un toque diferente a tus historias.
A veces siento que contar todo en orden puede ser un poco predecible o hasta aburrido, ¿no crees? Al cambiar el orden de los eventos, podemos darle a la historia un aire de misterio o suspenso que engancha al lector desde la primera página. Además, nos ayuda a mostrar a los personajes desde diferentes ángulos, revelando detalles que de otra forma quedarían escondidos.
Lo que me gusta de esta forma de contar historias es que no tienes que limitarte a una línea recta. Puedes mostrar un momento clave del pasado que explique por qué tu personaje actúa de cierta manera en el presente, o adelantarte para crear expectativa sobre lo que viene. Eso sí, hay que tener cuidado para que el lector no se sienta perdido. A veces basta con un pequeño cambio en el estilo del dibujo, un color distinto o hasta un detalle en la viñeta que indique que estamos en otro tiempo.
Cuando lo intenté por primera vez, me di cuenta de que planear bien las escenas es fundamental. No importa si no están en orden, lo importante es que cada pieza ayude a construir la historia completa. Por eso, hacer un storyboard antes de empezar a dibujar me salvó de confusiones y me permitió visualizar mejor cómo se conectan las escenas.
Algo que también me ha funcionado es jugar con flashbacks o flashforwards. Mostrar un recuerdo o un vistazo al futuro puede darle mucha fuerza a la narración. Pero ojo, si abusamos de estos saltos sin dar pistas claras, la historia puede volverse difícil de seguir y ahí sí que perdemos a los lectores.
En mangas que me encantan, como Berserk o Death Note, los creadores usan mucho esta técnica y el resultado es una historia cargada de tensión y profundidad. Eso me inspira a seguir explorando cómo contar mis propias historias de forma no lineal sin perder el hilo emocional.
Además, usando el diseño de página para guiar al lector podemos hacer que la experiencia sea fluida. A veces el ritmo de la historia cambia cuando saltamos en el tiempo, y eso es algo que podemos aprovechar para crear momentos de tensión o para darle un respiro a la lectura.
Si estás pensando en probarlo, te recomiendo que no te preocupes si al principio se siente complicado. Como todo, es cuestión de práctica y de encontrar el balance justo para que cada salto temporal tenga sentido y aporte algo a la historia. Al final, lo que queremos es que el lector se quede enganchado y sienta que está descubriendo algo especial.

Hello, community of artists and manga and anime enthusiasts!
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to tell stories that don’t follow the classic order of beginning, middle, and end. You know, those stories that jump around in time and make you piece the puzzle together as you read. Non-linear storytelling is exactly that, and if you’re creating comics or manga, it can be a very powerful tool to give your stories a different twist.
Sometimes I feel that telling everything in order can be a bit predictable or even boring, don’t you think? By changing the order of events, we can give the story an air of mystery or suspense that hooks the reader from the very first page. Plus, it helps us show characters from different angles, revealing details that would otherwise stay hidden.
What I like about this way of storytelling is that you don’t have to limit yourself to a straight line. You can show a key moment from the past that explains why your character acts a certain way in the present, or jump ahead to create anticipation about what’s coming. That said, you have to be careful so the reader doesn’t get lost. Sometimes a small change in the drawing style, a different color, or even a detail in the panel is enough to indicate that we’re in a different time.
When I tried it for the first time, I realized that planning the scenes well is essential. It doesn’t matter if they’re out of order; what’s important is that each piece helps build the complete story. That’s why making a storyboard before starting to draw saved me from confusion and helped me better visualize how the scenes connect.
Something else that has worked for me is playing with flashbacks or flashforwards. Showing a memory or a glimpse of the future can give a lot of strength to the narration. But watch out: if we overuse these jumps without giving clear clues, the story can become hard to follow, and that’s when we lose readers.
In mangas I love, like _Berserk_ or _Death Note_, the creators use this technique a lot, and the result is a story full of tension and depth. That inspires me to keep exploring how to tell my own stories non-linearly without losing the emotional thread.
Also, using page design to guide the reader can make the experience smooth. Sometimes the rhythm of the story changes when we jump in time, and that’s something we can use to create moments of tension or give the reader a breather.
If you’re thinking about trying it, I recommend not worrying if it feels complicated at first. Like everything, it’s a matter of practice and finding the right balance so every time jump makes sense and adds something to the story. In the end, what we want is for the reader to stay hooked and feel like they’re discovering something special.
