The story begins when a young beagle follows Marty an 11-year-old and when he tries to pat the beagle it backs away and cringes, Marty is sure that the beagle is being abused by its owner. Marty feels sorry for the dog and names him Shiloh. He turns to his dad to help him out and his dad says that it is Judd Travers dog new hunting dog. Marty doesn’t like Judd Travers because he cheats people, he kills deers out of season and chews tobacco and spits it near people he doesn’t like. When they take Shiloh back to Judd’s trailer he kicks his Shiloh and Marty pleads Judd to not kick Shiloh. 

Marty can’t keep Shiloh out of his head, so he decides to buy Shiloh from Judd, but his family doesn’t have enough money so he thinks of ways to earn money. Marty starts collecting cans and bottles and realizes it’ll take forever for him to raise money to buy Shiloh. He also needs to think what and how he’ll feed him because his family sends money for Grandma Preston’s care. Not much money is left.
