<p>A huge majority of many things we "know" today is thanks to screw-up others did in the past. This is not rhetoric, it is part of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method">scientific method</a>. Propose theories and hypothesis, attempt to prove them, discard the useless ones and refine and alter the good ones.<br /> The fun part of this is that, we are <b>NEVER</b> holding the absolute truth. Yes, we get closer to it each time the ideas are refined, but, as methods and tools improve, so does our knowledge.<br /> <b>That error is part of science</b></p> <center>https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2013/04/22/00/47/screw-106359_960_720.jpg</center> <hr /> <p>Through <b>science's history</b>, there's been several cases of recorded errors and misconceptions that today we know were "right" for years. Then, <b>a new discovery threw everything overboard</b>, bringing a crisis or a paradigm along with it. Heliocentrism taking geocentrism's crown, combustion took <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phlogiston_theory" target="_blank">phlogiston's</a> (a "fire" element), spontaneous creation got REKT by evolution, and Light lost it's monopoly of "fastest in the Known Universe" having to share the market with Neutrinos... <em>You get the idea</em>, <b>science dodges "absolutes"</b>.</p> <blockquote>Learning does not come from nowhere, it comes from mistakes, it comes from thinking out of the box and consider new ideas as plausible, <b>Otherwise we doom ourselves to remain stuck in mediocrity</b>.</blockquote> <p>I adore reading old magazines, books, school textbooks: Whatever I can find!<br /> Off the top of my head, I can recall a few cases where major f(u)ckups had an impact on society as we know it.</p> <hr /> <center>https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2013/04/23/07/08/bacteria-106583_960_720.jpg</center> <h3>First antibiotics.</h3> <p>Even when many ignore this, today we know that one cannot take antibiotics as if it were candy without consulting a professional first. They should always be taken under medical advise whenever possible. <b>Why?</b> One of the main reasons is the potential development of a resistance to the antibiotics by the bacteria. This, leads into immune infections that end up being VERY HARD to treat.<br /> This, was an unknown fact during the 30's/40's/50's. As a matter of fact, back then, there wasn't even a good mastery on antibiotics: Penicillin was discovered in 1928 and purified nearly 10 years later, in 1939.</p> <p>Before this famous AB existed, there were other ones, not-so-effective and significantly more <a href="https://steemit.com/@walden" target="_blank">toxic</a>, yet they had a widespread usage for generic treatments.<br /> I am talking about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfonamide_(medicine)" target="_blank"><b>sulphonamides</b>, they were the first antibacterial agents that were used to treat infections (after <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsphenamine">Arsphenamine</a> , a compound that contained arsenic used to treat syphilis).<br /> I've seen several magazine ads that promoted them for risk-free "daily use".</p> <hr /> <center>https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/06/26/23/51/bottle-1481599_960_720.jpg</center> <h3>Pestilent Organochlorides</h3> <p>This is something you may have heard about, an artificial pesticide. The origins date back to the manufacturing of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane" target="_blank"><b>DDT</b></a> in 1943. They are, essentially, high chlorine hydrocarbons. It was a banner of chemical poisons. Killing insects at its mere contact, attacking the nervous system. But, the toxicity remains even after year of being applied thanks to its slow degradation speed. Its action is not selective, it kills every insect: <b>Noxious or beneficial</b>, and many other kind of organisma (fishes, birds and mammals). The group of organochlorides left a huge hole in many biomes in the world.</p> <p>The advertisements about DDT in magazines were worse than a pest in some periods of time.</p> <p>Thankfully, today, they are forbidden at any civilized part of the world.</p> <hr /><hr /> <p>Lead paint, "healthy" cigarettes (before the 19th century, it was a medical belief that smoking was <b>GOOD</b> for the lungs; cannot quite recall at what novel I read that <em>-A great place to learn how people and cultures were around the writer-</em>; like, "Little Women" and the mention of "dog leather gloves" as a luxury item)...<br /> At several points in history, we were wrong!!! Thank that people that did not stuck themselves in mediocrity and kept on looking for: <center><h1>Bigger Truths</h1></center></p> <center>https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/06/15/11/49/question-mark-2405198_960_720.jpg</center>

Thank you @renzoarg **HOW TO ESCAPE MEDIOCRITY** So you’re doing alright, chugging along. Your life isn’t awful, but it’s not that great either. How do you give yourself that kick on the bum to get motivated to make your life great? It comes down to the pain and pleasure principle, (which I’ll sum up for you in a moment). Mediocrity is a horrible insidious trap, because it doesn’t quite give you the discomfort to get you moving and changing. Sitting down on a radiator will get you moving in a few seconds, because of the intense pain which motivates you to change your circumstances. And a minute or two later you’re doing just fine. Yet you can sit in an uncomfortably hot room for hours. Same with a mediocre life – you can get trapped for years, living an alright existence. It’s not something that will get you to jump up excited out of bed at 5 in the morning, but at the same time it’s not painful enough to make you jump up and shout “I WILL CHANGE!” So let’s get you motivated to live the life you really want! **IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EMOTIONAL MOTIVATION** You can think about the logical reasons for changing all day long. But motivation comes from deep in your gut – from your emotions. As I discuss in more detail in How to Conquer Fear, the emotional part of your brain doesn’t respond to logical reasons. It responds to vivid images and movies you make in your head. The key to kicking up your motivation isn’t to find more logical reasons. The key is to start imagining how great your life will be if you change, and how horrible it will be if you keep going the way you’re going, until you jump up and shout “I WILL CHANGE!” **KICK UP THE RELATIVE PAIN AND PLEASURE (DON’T SKIP THIS)** Take a few moments to answer the following questions, and really imagine the answers. This alone will give you a mighty motivational kick on the bum to move you towards greatness. And doing it right now will drive this principle deep into your subconscious, so you can benefit from it later. (I want you take away something real from reading this article.) Okay, let’s get started: … What would change give you? What would your “great” life look like? Take a few moments to imagine it. Earning money doing something you love. Spending free time doing something you love. Being with people you will love hanging out with. Imagine it now. … Okay, come back. Now take a few moments to imagine what your life will be like if you keep living in mediocrity. Keeping an “alright” job. Living an “alright” life. Where will you be in 20 years, if you keep living like that? … Now image being on your death bed, thinking about your life behind you. How will you feel if you live a life in alignment with your core values? What will you have achieved? How about a mediocre life. What will you see when you reach your deathbed? What will your life have been like? Would you be happy with it? ESCAPING MEDIOCRITY IS ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT Living a great life doesn’t mean influencing millions of people or being famous or being super-rich. At least not for everyone. Living a great life is about living in alignment with your values. Doing something you love. A great life is when you wake up excited every morning, and go to sleep content every night. A great life is when you know you’ve done a great job each day, each week… and that you’re truly living the life you want. Isn’t that worth changing for? Facing a bit of discomfort? That’s up to you to answer. Because in the end, your life won’t change until you want it to change.

I saw a good image once that I wish I could find again about two people and the truth. One person was closer, but neither were right on it and the argument should be about bringing each other closer to the truth and not claiming that you are holding the absolute truth because you aren't.

I think most people will choose mediocrity because it takes less energy, we humans are naturally laze and will almost always choose the easy path. IMHO cheers

Formal education has always been a bane on society regarding mediocrity. As deGrasse Tyson says: >'We spend the first year of a child's life teaching it to walk and talk and the rest of its life to shut up and sit down' When questioning a teacher, you're questioning a face of Authority. They know they are a face of authority and so they do not like being questioned. Having been a teacher I know this feeling. You do not want to be wrong. School is an absolute 'truth' as far as you should be concerned. This goes right through to University, where you are made to sit down in huge lecture halls and simply soak up what is known. That's not teaching. They're not even trained teachers to begin with, they're just throwing their knowledge at you. There's very little room for discussion, debate, skepticism (this does happen increasingly so, to be fair, but the system on the whole is massively flawed) It breeds within us a mediocrity, a desire to be in a state of rest. When one comes along who is different, more energetic, more inquisitive, more physically involved, more emotional, they get hammered down with discipline and drugs until they're roughly the same as the status quo. Only the exceptional among us manage to break through the mold and continue looking for # Bigger truths The only thing we have to fight against it now is the internet, but unfortunately people become inquisitive long after they should have learnt the scientific process in which to do so, and we end up with all kinds of conspiracy theorists and breatharians. Sigh.
