Each potion gives you an additional 70 HP although be warned that you can still take damage in whatever round you choose to take it! Personally I think the best way to use them is to pick a dungeon you can just about clear usually and then use the potion towards the end - you get a feeling for when it's hopeless even with one, as is the case with this example.
