Reading Through the Stack!
When I quit full time work back in 2018 one of my main goals was to read more.

I started off well enough that first summer, I read a couple of decent books, but since then I've been VERY slack, I mean REALLY slack.... I can't think of a single actual book I've read since 'Why We Sleep' by Mathew Walker back in that summer, an excellent read BTW.

I probably have read one or two, I've certainly dipped my nose into a few but I've been slack, so 2023 is the year to remedy that.

I've selected a few out of my 'unread pile' to wage immediate more on... some of these I've had sitting in my Dad's garage all through my move to Hereford and then Portugal and back, others I carried with me and they just stayed boxed for the most part!

Here's a picture, they are in no particular order, I'll just read what I fancy when I fancy.....

![IMG-20230107-WA0011.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/revisesociology/23tvnk3YreaZxQJomQfDmTY3q3gtJn6Xii1GPE1zfywqfM9vYE5ZgRAA5QCuWK45fCF9K.jpeg)

As you can see they are pretty sociology and economics and philosophy heavy, what can I say, they are the sort of shit that i like!

Starting points....

I'm starting with Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark, a book about AI, although I'm not that impressed two chapters in, but that's O.K. as I read critically and there's nothing wrong with reading something you don't entirely agree with!

I'm also reading Antonopolous' (excuse spelling) The Internet of Money, which has been on my list for ages, not pictured, it's a digital download, which while several years old now is nonetheless a nice refresher on Bitcoin (mainly) basics, albeit with things having moved on a tad.

### What's next on the reading list ...?

I'm tempted by 'A History of Salt' just because it's the most obscure one on my list, I picked that up in a charity shop must have been six years ago, just thinking about it tempts me in!

Then maybe the book on stats and damned lies, a classic, and something good for my main blog (a lot of these are work related, but they all interest me.)

Then I'm not sure, probably Never Let a Good Crisis go to Waste or the Zizek, it's about time i went for something heavy.

Certainly The Division of Labour in Society by Durkheim is bottom of the list, but I've always wanted to go back and actually read the Sociology classics, and you never know that might surprise me!

I'm not ruling out reading more, but I'm going to read at least four from the unread pile first and then one new for one old! I have to get through these, or at least try, I mean I might find that some of them just aren't worth the effort!

### I'll need a few new tools for the job...

I'm probably going to take my house back in Hereford in April, and when I do I will buy myself a reading chair and a reading light, for now I'll settle for a decent pair of reading slippers!

I'm contemplating buying a dog too, maybe, I'll have to make a firm decision to rule out a stint abroad for the next 15 years or so if I do, but it's tempting - dog at my feet while reading!

Something else I really NEED is a trip the opticians - my eyesight is not what it once was and a decent pair of reading glasses is going to be essential if I'm to up my reading game!

I honestly don't know why I haven't been reading more these past few years, it's something I really enjoy, the slow and relaxed pace of it, and, of course, it gives me something to think and write about!

You might want to consider getting some pinhole glasses which exercise the eye muscles and yoga for the eyes, which apparently can both improve vision. My understanding of normal glasses is that they make eyesight worse as they make the eye muscle lazy, so you'll need to keep getting stronger glasses. i've chosen not to get any and can still read ok if light is good and print not too small. Very occasionally i'll wear an old pair of reading glasses i found (which make the letters crystal clear), like for reading food ingredient labels, but remove them asap.

Good luck with the reading.

RE: Reading Through the Stack!
And if you do decide to get some reading glasses, they cost 2 quid in Poundland i think. Best not to go to opticians, they're nearly as bad as (most) doctors and dentists, not interested in helping people, or perhaps thinking they are helping but ego's stopping them from looking beyond the brainwashing training! Rant over (for now :-)

i've not tried pinhole glasses myself, but i've followed @healthranger Mike Adams for many years and think he knows his stuff. He writes about them here

Ever had one before, if not.. **DON'T**. They are a lot of work, and it's like having a mini kid. Cats are way easier to handle.

The only one of those books I've read is Sapiens. It was an interesting read. His Homo Deus is about the potential future for humans. Not sure I agreed with his outlook, but nobody really knows. Most of my reading is lighter stuff, but I like a bit of science too.
