Strategies for Language Learning when You Don't Get out Much?!?
I’m determined to improve my Portuguese, and I’ve upped my game over the last couple of weeks, practising a lot more than previously.

The main barrier I’ve got is that the best strategy for learning a language is ‘full immersion’, but I don’t really have the capacity to immerse myself that fully into listening to and speaking Portuguese every day - I don’t have a face to face job here, and outside of work I’m just not that social - I never really socialised that much back in the UK, and I’m not about to change that habit just for the sake of making small talk to learn a language.

So I’ve hit on the following strategies to immerse myself as fully as I can in the language:

### 1. Using Practice Portuguese to ‘learn the basics’

[Practice Portuguese](https://www.practiceportuguese.com/) is an excellent web-based platform for learning specifically European, rather than Brazilian Portuguese - they are different enough to warrant a bespoke site.

I especially like it because it's a small independent company run by two people, and I've got my first year for free due to advertising for them! (But I'll probably just pay for a subscription next year!).

They have a great basics package of lessons and then a 'smart review' programme through which you practice phrases over and over and it upgrades them to short, then long term memory and finally mastered, according to how many times you've reviewed them (you can tweak their level manually too!)

![Screenshot 2021-07-01 at 16.31.04.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/revisesociology/EoKBbqBcuzhocfNZriVhefKf4FTFTSKit2rsajjpYW5DWAPUeVmsiEe9ZKa5W5ZUsPu.png)

### 2. Using Practice Portugues Podcasts

Listening is a real challenge but Practice Portugues has some excellent podcasts which are transcribed and translated, and reading along with the text is a great way of picking up on words, then without the transcript in the car.

It's still challenging, but I'm getting there!

### 3. Crafting my own dialogues relevant to what I need based on what I learn from ‘Practice Portugues’

I try and incorporate what I learn online into my various daily Portuguese dialogues - i've got two coming up - I need to get a puncture fixed and to try out a new phone service, so I prep in advance before diving in...

![Screenshot 2021-07-01 at 20.13.13.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/revisesociology/23tHb6kphj6aL1eGFiAdAkgVQJtnT6EsReW5vgo69ecvduXgZh7Ap9qYHS1t2jPEq9KDM.png)

I tend to mail myself these lists and practice en-route. They're helpful, sometimes.

### 4. Translating some of my blog posts into Portuguese

I've found this to be surprisingly helpful - i simply cut and paste sections of each blog into Translate and then simplify it, given that my level is lower in Portuguese, into something I might have a chance of saying - so I cut out any idioms or the pluperfect for example, and try to swap any complex words - such as 'incorporate' above would become 'include' in my translation, i can live without learning both words for now!

### 5. Watching Portuguese daytime T.V.

This is probably more like a 'will do'. When I go in the local bakery I've noticed they always have a certain 'daytime' TV chat show on, very much like Morning TV in the UK, with short clips, often with slogans outlining what the topics are - perfect for a little listening practice - it's a guilty pleasure of mine too - nonsense chat shows!

![Screenshot 2021-07-01 at 20.16.38.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/revisesociology/23tvCoYdHU4MKj2rpYVssXok4PgDGiEuVJsojAhAYQ7qAexGJ7GMKMfCAbNRBHtZ4BLEK.png)

I could well be the only person in the country that watches these as anything other than 'wallpaper'!

### 5. Listening to Portuguese Radio

I do this in the car a lot - the news is useful - especially when its about Sport, the Weather or Covid-19, I'm starting to pick up words - 'Entao' = 'then'. There's several they use over and over!

### 6. Making the most of every opportunity to actually speak Portuguese in real life!

I don't really get out much, I don't enjoy it, but I do at least TRY to speak Portuguese when I can, but I'm not going to go out of my way to make small talk!

### 7. Of course I’ll also be looking out for actual face to face sessions too!

And I quite fancy the idea of being a student again, after all those years in teaching, it'd make a change!

I'll get there in the end!

Eu vou chegar, no la final.

They say that is not an easy language so I salute you for keep learning and practice!

Estou orgulhosa de ti :)

Not sure how it's functioning at the moment but during lockdown and a few months ago we had the TV schooling and one of the subjects was Portuguese for the non native.
Try to find "Estudo em Casa" maybe there's some saved videos or archived on the RTP website.

Vocabulary. Words, words, words. Forget grammar- when you understand the words you can figure that out.
Have a notebook ready, write every new word down, as you learn it.
Rewatch your favourite movies / shows in the language you want to learn.

OK - thanks, good to know it works, and learning words kind of suits me as well!

Hearing them in the dialects around here is another matter!

It might be unconventional but the first and foremost thing I will ever use for learning languages from now on is "Pimsleur Method." Used it twice and it is quite amazing, check it out.

All the things you listed though are surely of great help.

Rosetta Stone is really good for quickly learning a language, especially if you have limited time (or capacity) for social gatherings to hone conversational skills.

Before my chronic illness really kicked in harshly I had plans to travel central and South America and possibly settle somewhere like Mexico. I spent 3 months learning Spanish using a friends subscription of Rosetta Stone and was very surprised how effective it was. I still have very basic Spanish just from those three months of daily practice on Rosetta Stone. I'm not sure how much it costs these days but due to the way it teaches you (in the same way young children acquire language through visual association) it really is the dogs bollocks 😂

Beyond that, as you've already identified the best way to learn a language quickly is to hang out with Portuguese people and try to talk conversationally. I beleive that there are informal meetings you can attend where Portuguese people and English meet simply to learn through conversational practicing. Maybe look into that as they're usually more of a formal setting rather than the pressure to be in a social situation if you're a natural introvert.

Hope you're well and you're finding time to relax on your land and soak up the sun. All the best.

I'll have a look at Rosetta stone, it is my priority now, language learning.

'Soaking up the sun' is precisely what I don't want, dodging it is more the reality!

The great thing about Rosetta stone is that it teaches using images.
When I was learning Spanish 'la nina come' (the girl eats) + 'el nino come' (the boy eats) still stick with me to this day and I can translate those sentences with only a brief pause.

It is completely because through repetition doing the lessons over and over the image is triggering the recognition of the words which is how children acquire language. It is hard wired into our brains for this method to work. However, I do think that how effective it is for an adult might vary a little dependent on how visually inclined they are in cognitive biases/function. I know I'm visually inclined in how I process things and particularly memory, so that might contribute to why Rosetta Stone worked so well for me.

But, it's worth a try if it isn't too expensive.

Ha ha, I also suffer at the hands of high levels of heat but usually only for 2 months max. When I travelled Thailand it took me 6 weeks to acclimatize and after that I felt really energized by the heat and sun. But I was only travelling SE Asia for 10 weeks so it took me half my time sweating buckets and drinking nearly my body weight in water before my system normalized 😂

Well, at least you have olive trees to shelter under for the shade.
