Every fight does not happen suddenly. So you have more options. You can get a lot of messages observing the attacker. Pay attention to not only what he says but also what his body language shows.

You see how violent the attacker is and slowly it is getting intense. Sometimes you can change the situation by talking to the possible attacker. You can calm him down. Sometimes you do not have to prove that you are right. Try to understand why that person acts like that.

Most of the time, when someone says something bad or negative, we get angry. Later, the situation is getting in a negative direction. You need to control your emotions. It feels bad when someone behaves in a bad way. 

Still, you have more control. The way you react to the situation can change a lot of things. If you are able to calm the possible attacker down, maybe you do not have to fight to protect yourself.

One thing I say sometimes, that is, if you can run and get out of there, you can run and move from there. But sometimes you just cannot run to protect yourself. The attacker might catch you or the attacker has a weapon, if you run, you will be an easy target since you expose your back while running.

Likewise, sometimes whatever you say to change the situation or calm the possible attacker down, he takes that negatively although you said that in a positive way. That's a problem. And usually, when people get angry, they cannot think clearly. In this situation, if somehow, you can walk away and let the attacker win what he is fighting for, that can be a good idea.
