Could Steem Replace Linked-In?

![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdAvikK1XkNFAmGNs7CtiXbB1tSn9hmfEBCspd15KP2eK/image.png)

Like many people in business - I have a Linked-in account with thousands of my closest friends connected to me. In my previous business - I was constantly being solicited and bothered - so I learned to ignore Linked-In for the most part.

Today I used Linked-In for its true purpose - to reconnect with other like minded individuals.

What I discovered was a feed full of desperate attempts at attention. Stupid info graphics or quotes by authors that the poster is hoping will get engagement from their following.

The people that matter to me are on Linked-In but only use it as a place to update their contact information. Only one person has gotten back to me so far though I wish she hadn't.

This woman switched really quickly from kissing my ass to ignoring me. I asked her a question - she gave me a snarky dismissive response. These days i'm not lining her pockets - why should she be nice? I ended the conversation with a little bit of information - her ears perked up, demeanor changed and all of a sudden she wanted my information. I decided not to elaborate - maybe she'll think about it.

The rest of the people I contacted i'm waiting to hear back from. I know some people wont get back to me for weeks - but these people are my real life network - they actually will get back to me (and they all might be dismissive).

So who are the thousands of people on my Linked-In? There are hundreds of people if not thousands that ive done business with - maybe I only spoke to them once - but I certainly did business with them.

Like all social media - the less followers you have the less serious you look. The more followers you have the more your feed is full of desperate pleas. If most people could only keep 10 people on their linked in - it would probably be the same 10 people whose phone number they have programmed in their phone.

The worst part of LinkedIn is their monetization strategy. As an employer I have used their services to find me qualified applicants. After 2 weeks of sorting through a multitude of unqualified applicants - I ended up hiring a recruitment agency.

The problem with Linked-In is that it lost its way. You shouldn't have to pay for added functionality - even if it is B2B. The whole purpose of it is the "7 degrees of separation" model is to find people through your contacts. Your friend has friends who have friends and you can meet all these people by carefully navigating your way through contacts. I've never connected with someone 3 degrees away from me - but it sounds more valuable than their paid services.

Linked-In is essentially a giant resume with a feed that gets spammed with the same articles people are pushing on other social networks that day. For me it is a giant broken network that probably will be replaced by something better.

Could the block-chain make a concept like linked in better? Would an ecosystem like Steem be a better place for employers and employees to connect? Could the flow of spam be stopped or reduced because of the Steemit ability to flag spam quickly?

What I do know is Linked-In feels like a rickety ship that probably will go the way of Myspace. I'm also learning that sometimes we become out of touch with a contact for a reason - sometimes its because they suck.

I love the article and it poses a great question . It would be nice if we could stop the spam on linkedin and other sites. It would also be nice if we could keep the spam off of steemit, but I don't think there will be a way. The voting system here will fail in the end if things continue on their current path. I have written a blog that seems like it was designed just as an answer to your blog. I am not here to spam your post. I'm sorry if it came off that way. As a matter of fact, I have not even uploaded the blog yet. I had no intent of uploading it until I read yours. This was just a huge coincidence. Ugh... Even that sounds spammy to me. I have followed you since I joined and this is not something I do. Enough about that though. As far as LinkedIn goes, I found it pretty much useless and didn't invest a lot of time in it. I realize that it can probably be useful for some people, but it just wasn't for me. I feel the same way that you did about the contact information as well. If I want to get in contact with someone on a professional level then I normally have their phone number or a way to obtain it. Hopefully someone will design a platform to operate on the steem blockchain which will rival LinkedIn for people, such as yourself, who do find value in it. That being said, if you do read my blog once I upload it, please do NOT up vote it. That would make me feel even worse for mentioning it. I hate spam just as much as every other person out there, and if you flag this comment I will completely understand. I will still follow you and I will still support you. I just thought I could add some value and insight to your post. Spamming was not my intention. I thank you very much for the well written blog. Keep up the good work.

I don't think Steemit will replace any of the actual social networks, but it will integrate the somehow, Steemit is different and it has already shown that when they try to make it work like other as youtube and instagram with dtube and steepshot it gets weird, I mean the post are different and it is not natural, I hope they fix it

I feel steemit is just trying to push limits and create a space for more possibilities with the power of blockchain. I feel like it’s going to work out well in the long run :)

Linked-in is fading off slowly and I really hope steemit keeps it’s strict policies and not get compromised so as to maintain the nature and standards on which it was built

Strongly disagree. Linkedin as a networking and recruiting platform is becoming more valuable than ever. The 23B price tag Microsoft paid at the time of acquisition seemed excessive but it looks to be a great move. The ads as well as the data are quite valuable.

If anything, there are a few niche sites that provide platforms for very specific professional groups, such as coders, bankers, or medical professionals, but nearly every member of those sites are also on linkedin.... heck, most allow you to carbon copy over your linkedin profile!

The reason Microsoft bought it was it hits their core demographic - professionals who buy their software. Buying Linked-In doesn't mean that they wont allow it to drive itself into the ground. Look at Nokia - they were 4% of Finlands GDP at one point but now they are owned by Microsoft and don't even make phones anymore (they license their name). I think its an excellent way to store business cards - most people keep their contact info up to date - but their paid services suck.

Im not sure what positions you were recruiting for using Linked-In - last time I used it I needed 8 people and only had one HR guy. It was a disaster. The recruitment industry is still thriving because Linked-In hasn't come close to solving the job market. You have a better chance finding a job from your friends on facebook. The first place most people look when hiring people is to their employees friends - it makes up almost 40% of all hires. The majority of jobs are never posted publicly - Linked-In doesn't change this.
