>These last few days I started watching Peaky Blinders and after finishing its first season I would like to share with you a series of random thoughts about it that I tried to put together with a little bit of coherence.

Estos últimos días empecé a ver Peaky Blinders y tras terminar su primera temporada me gustaría compartir con ustedes una serie de pensamientos aleatorios sobre ella que traté de unir con un poco de coherencia. 

>The first thing I want to say is that Peaky Blinders is a very well done series, from a technical point of view we would have to get quite nitpicky to find any problem with it, the performances are great and the story is very well told.

Lo primero que quiero decir es que Peaky Blinders es una serie muy buen hecha, desde un punto de vista técnico tendríamos que ponernos bastante quisquillosos para encontrar algún defecto, las actuaciones son prolijas y la historia está muy bien llevada.

>The funny thing is that it is presented as a historical drama and while technically that's true, the execution shows simpler intentions than that. Yes, the story is about a family of gangsters during the 20s, but at the end of the day it is nothing more than an engine for an aesthetic display that has the almost sole intention of making the Shelby brothers look like the cool guys of the story

Lo curioso es que se vende como un drama histórico y aunque técnicamente es verdad, la ejecución demuestra intenciones un poco más simples que eso. Si, la historia va de una familia de gangsters durante los años 20, pero al final del día no es más que un motor para el despliegue estético interesantísimo que tiene como intención casi única hacer quedar a los hermanos Shelby como los cool del cuento. 

>For me this is the greatest virtue of Peaky Blinders in its good moments, Steven Knight - Its creator - evokes a sensation of magnetism difficult to describe, you feel trapped by the chaotic energy that his protagonists emanate, it's very reminiscent of what Scorsese showed us at Goodfellas or Casino, or slightly more recent works that were born on the small screen, such as Breaking Bad or House Of Cards. The problem is that because of this same energy, his script refuses to take his characters to a more unworthy plane in silly moments where it should.

Para mi esta es la mayor virtud de Peaky Blinders en sus buenos momentos, Steven Knight – Su creador – evoca una sensación de magnetismo difícil de describir, te sientes atrapado por la energía caótica que emanan sus protagonistas, recuerda mucho a lo que nos mostraba Scorsese en  Goodfellas o Casino, u obras un poco más recientes que nacieron en la pantalla chica, como Breaking Bad o House Of Cards. El problema es que por esta misma energía su guion se niega a llevar sus personajes a un plano más indigno en momentos tontos donde sí debería. 

>One of the best examples I find of this stems from the interactions that Tommy Shelby (brilliantly played by Cillian Murphy, by the way) has with his love interest from the first season, Grace Burguess, there is no dialogue between these two that does not feel like a tumblr-bait and this, when you see it with a bit of cynicism, it ends up being uncomfortable. The "already broken", iconic scene that any fan will identify from a logical point of view makes sense and tells us a lot about his character, his mental state, but at the same time it feels too inorganic and this is a problem that Peaky Blinders repeats constantly. Everything is built to make them look good, even when they must show vulnerability, as a consequence it is easy for the series itself to take you out of the experience if you do not get carried away by the almost videoclip style that it displays, which I do not mean as a bad critic.

Uno de los mejores ejemplos que encuentro de esto deriva de las interacciones que Tommy Shelby (brillantemente interpretado por Cillian Murphy, por cierto) tiene con su interés romántico de la primera temporada, Grace Burguess, no existe un dialogo entre estos dos que no se sienta como un tumblr-bait y esto, cuando lo ves con un poco de cinismo termina incomodando. El “already broken”, escena icónica que cualquier fan va a identificar, desde un punto de vista lógico tiene sentido y nos dice mucho sobre su personaje, su estado mental, pero a la vez se siente demasiado inorgánico y esto es un problema que Peaky Blinders repite constantemente. Todo está construido para hacerles quedar bien, incluso cuando deben mostrar vulnerabilidad, como consecuencia es fácil que la propia serie te saque de la experiencia si no te dejas llevar por el estilo casi videoclipero que despliega, que no lo digo como crítica.

>Despite all this the series becomes really enjoyable, after you accept its gimmicky nature and play by its rules there is a lot to see, covered in a catalog of music that only a place like the BBC could have and a couple of incredible sets, there is reason not to recommend it.
>
>We could open a whole debate on how Peaky Blinders is closer to an aggressive teenage drama than to a historical series like The Crown, but for me this is precisely the key ... I feel that that tone is very much in line with the story they want to tell us and anything else would be boring.

A pesar de todo esto se hace demasiado disfrutable,  luego de que aceptas su naturaleza efectista y juegas bajo sus reglas hay mucho que ver, empapada con un catálogo de música que solo un lugar como la BBC podría tener y un par de sets increíbles, no hay razón para no recomendarla.

Podríamos abrir todo un debate sobre como Peaky Blinders se acerca más a un agresivo drama adolescente que a una serie histórica en plan The Crown,  pero para mí esta es precisamente la clave…  siento que ese tono va muy acorde a la historia que nos quieren contar, cualquier otra cosa sería aburrida.
