Sage advice from a man who I consider the smartest person in America. For anyone not familiar with Thomas Sowell, he's an author, educator, syndicated columnist and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford. He's taught economics, intellectual history and social policy at Cornell, UCLA and Amherst. Sowell was born and raised in Harlem and is a product of New York public schools. I had a professor in college suggest (in hushed terms so as not to be overheard by colleagues) reading one of his books... In the years since I've read every book he's written.

He's long been an opponent of liberal policies and has been described as a "bootstrap theorist." In other words, if blacks in America want upward mobility, they better quit waiting on white people to do it for them- his advice is to get off your ass and do it yourself. In his latest book, Dismantling America, Sowell outlines why America is in decline, blaming academic elites as well as the Obama administration.

This interview was done in 2010, just after the book came out. Sowell traces America's decline as far back as the Woodrow Wilson (an academic elite) administration. Wilson believed that the Constitution is obsolete and he attempted to use his elitism to circumvent the intentions of the framers. It's gotten progressively worse, culminating with Obama (another academic elite). If you're interested in understanding America's decline, I suggest spending half an hour listening to this brilliant man.
