I guess I'm cheating a little to find three aspects of the *one thing* I wish didn't exist for @galenkp's Weekend Engagement series. But when I think about what things in society I wish hadn't changed, all I can think about is the hopeful early days of the internet and the promise it held, and how it taints every aspect of our waking lives these days. Would I turn it off? Hell yeah. But I guess I'm just longing, like most of us, for a more simple time that no longer exists. There's three things about the internet that I think have had a negative impact on our lives - here they are. ### The Internet Being Made Mobile I love this old photo of Jamie. It's in our first house together in the UK, a tiny miner's cottage with a stream that ran underneath the buiding. In the nook under the stairs, we made a spot for the computer. Yes, young folk, that's a computer. They weren't flat screened laptops or mobile phones you carried in your pocket. I miss going to a dedicated place to go on the internet. Back when I travelled in the early 2000's you'd go to an internet cafe and pay for fifteen minutes and check your emails or book a flight and you'd be done. Now we go down Tik Tok rabbit holes for more hours than are healthy. Anyone can get in touch with you at any time, and you are bugged by notifications after notifications, and even if you switch them off or leave your phone at home, there's that nagging feeling of having to respond to people. I even miss the sound of dial up internet. Sure, it was slow, but we didn't know what fast actually was. I loved sitting down with a wine and logging on to MSN to message friends I'd met in Spain that lived in the Yucatan Peninsula or a guy I met in Scotland or Perth. It felt like we had *time* for those things, back then. Now I'm so worn out and screen tired I tend to be terse and almost absent in any online conversation. I hate having to make *rules* about phones - for example, let's vow not to have the phone in bed past 7 pm, let's have breakfast together without checking *anything* on our phone, including the weather. Let's just pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist. ### The Internet Being Commodified Back when we used to rent DVDs from the ~~video~~ dvd shop, we'd google reviews of the films we wanted to watch. You'd get great reviews from real movie buffs that knew their cinematography and their arthouse from their noir. You could read a review without wondering what the vested interest was of the site or being hit by a ton of pop up ads. Now we're lucky to even find an independent film amongst the mass produced, let alone a review that I trust. Now, too, films and series are on streaming services - you pay a huge company for the priveledge of watching, unless you're watching them on an illegal site, which I'd be okay with but for the fact artists need to be paid somehow. ### Everything is an Algorithm & Freedom is Lie I miss being able to choose where I go and what I watch on the internet without the algorithms steering us in directions they think we want to go. It's not just shopping, either, it's political news and targeted advertising. I spent a lot of time trying to confound the algorithms only to get depressed, knowing that there's some powerful psychology behind it all designed to get me hooked and to feed me what it thinks I want. And whilst I am pretty savvy about not being manipulated, it's depressing to know the rest of the world isn't. Somehow, we've become google-ified - if Google doesn't like your jam, you're going to slide so far down you may be invisible. The top searches aren't there because they were there first or because they're super popular, it's because people are throwing a shit ton of money at them to make sure they're at the top. #### Of course, there's HIVE. But if someone said 'hey, we're pulling the pin on this - are you in?', I'd say 'fuck yeah'. Of course, I'd try to get your real life contacts first, Hive folk. Because I love you, and I'd miss you, and I'd sure want to keep in touch - or pop by for a real life cuppa one day, whereever you are, my phone on silent, in my bag, under the table. <center> # `With Love,` **Are you on HIVE yet? >Even in it's absence it is a presence. Yes! I read this in one of your comments. This is exactly how it feels. I have to sit here and literally intentionally tell myself not to pick up my phone, Iβm spending family time and text messages, emails and Google can wait. I find myself still thinking about things (including Hive) when Iβm taking a break from my phone. I love this post and agree with every aspect you talked about. I too miss those days when you had to make an effort to get online instead of it being right next to us all day long. Conveniences make us more lazy along the way. What we used to have to take time to read and research about we can easily ask Siri to do for us. Remember when phone books were in use? I remember when my mom used to ask me to look through it to find certain business and I cringed. It took time and effort but now it only takes seconds. I think itβs a healthy practice to take time away from our devices and tune in to our family and friends and focus more on whatβs in front of us in that moment. This was such a great read ~

Thanks so much. I know you get it. I worry about the kids to be honest - you see them leave the classroom after school and they are straight on it - it's part of their bodies these days. I can't even imagine how you manage that with your kids. They need to learn how to be bored, and to discover things WITHOUT the internet.

Yes!! We have limited time slots that our kids can play video and online games and look on the internet (never without our supervision and only on Fridays and Saturdays). We have an open door policy when they are on their devices. We pretty much try to make it to where everyone is in the same room so we can hold each other accountable. My kids have learned to get creative when bored during the week π. We are definitely helping them to expand their imaginations π€£.

I remember the dedicated area for the big beige box. My area didn't look too different from yours. It was nice having this one area for the internet and not having it follow us around everywhere, and our brand of uber-capitalism hadn't yet spread to Internet and infected everything. We didn't even have ads on webpages for a very long time, and none of the search engines had paid results. The convenience of having the Internet on our phones goes without saying. But at the same time, I do find myself purposefully allowing my phone to die every now and again as a way of escaping back to that time when it wasn't everywhere.

You know it. I think those who REMEMBER what it was like yearn for it. It's so hard to just switch the phone off. I read a great book once where the future had the Internet basically plugged into our brains. After a global apocalypse where it entirely disappeared, many of the characters minds just broke as they constantly searched in their heads for the things that weren't there any more - messaging, reviews, maps, weather. I find my brain twitching for answers that can only be found on my phone. Even in it's absence it is a presence.

I must admit to sitting when I am a vegetable and watching tiktoks on my husband's old phone. And I generate my posts exclusively on an old computer Tom keeps running for me. But mostly I don't use online stuff much and seldom communicate with people that way. I prefer a telephone or in person.

Technology is really High-tech these days. Sometimes I talk to elderly customers on the phone who complain that they miss the time when they only thought about turning ON and OFF when operating appliances and gadgets.π

Hahaha. I think I'm here everyday in some form or another. There are a handful of people that are fun to communicate with even though I don't really know them. It's a place I can get things off my mind without having a mess.

The internet has been a blessing in many ways, but I agree that many things used to be simpler. At times, and in some things, it seems to move forward and become more complicated. I had forgotten about Messenger! What a great memory. I liked it because I could talk to my best friend at the time, who lived far away.

In my very personal case, I could mention two things that benefit me π: faster communication with my family who have decided to emigrate π« And, the second is that, as I try to lead a simpler life (without so many objects that fill my shelves or drawers) I find it easier, for example, to have an application that serves me as an agenda instead of having a notebook that takes up space in my home π€

In Cuba we have had mobile data for a few years (2018), previously very few people accessed the internet. I have not yet reached a decade in the use of networks and I have, sometimes, the feeling that it has been all my life The previous weekend I was on a silent retreat, in the middle of the mountains, without connection. When I returned, the world remained the sameπ¬π

It was only 3 days of silence, we were thinking of doing a 10-day vippasana, but it couldn't be done. The economic and logistical conditions in Cuba right now are very difficult. So, I was doing the Yoga teacher training for the last 7 months and the end would be a retreat. And it could only be done in 3 days but it was very good. In the middle of the Sierra de los Γrganos in the Pinar del Rio province. Without telephone connection or any type. In an agroecological project called Ramaviva, in Spanish it means living branch. A hug from Havana!!!

>Now we go down Tik Tok rabbit holes for more hours than are healthy. A rabbit hole indeed. Had to set a timer to this particular app because it took most of my time which of course wasn't healthy to me educationally and intellectually. I still visit the app once in a while but I don't spend more than ten minutes on it. I second everything in this article. I grew up to witness my parents going to the cyber cafe and paying for their services but I never did myself. Thinking of it, I know it'd be a beautiful experience. I mean life was simple back then and fun; my dad says it almost every time and I wish I was born in that age. The internet right now is a place of oppression.

Yes, it's crazy how we are all being oppressed yet can't look away! It's easy to say times were better, but they just were. There's a lot more freedom away from the machines and I am yet to find an argument I agree with to keep it switched on.
