Post Work Tunes with Dad

I've started working again - just some emergency teaching - to top up funds and keep my sanity whilst I wait to get our house back. Mind you, this is usually the last term of the year to earn money before the Year 12's finish and those teachers are free for cover lessons - make hay whilst the sun shines, as they say. It's actually lovely being back at work. Unlike my old job where I worked really hard and was bullied and unappreciated, here I feel part of a team and valued. Everyone seems to really care about me and are happy to see me, so it makes the monotony more than bearable.

I don't actually *want* a full time job - I don't feel emotionally capable, and I struggle to find any kind of work life balance or fulfilment in that career anymore. I'm happy doing this. Of course, if anyone wants to drop me half a mil, I wouldn't work at all. I don't find fulfilment in this particular grind.

You know what's really lovely, though? Coming home and hanging with Dad listening to tunes. Last night I got home, went for a quick walk around the block, and then pulled my yoga mat into the loungeroom to do some stretches and holds whilst Dad got out Qbuzz on his phone and played music through his amazing fancy speakers.

It's pretty cool listening to music on them that you've heard before - they're so good it just hits different, and you can understand just why they are good tunes to start with.

The following tunes are Dad's really - I don't know if I'd seek them out, though I might do, to remind me of him. We listened to a lot last night - Johnny Cash, Bill Callahan, Canned Heat, Bill Wyman, Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed and lots more - so it's a little hard to chose.

This one I've never heard *anywhere* but Dad's place. He had her on vinyl. These songs are really well constructed - quite complex American Roots songs. It's hard to believe that this album is 50 years old - I had to look it up as I'd never bothered. I would have been two years old at the time.

The next one Dad listened to about four times. He loves this song - he says it tugs at his heart strings. Another American band. I can't remember it growing up and to be honest I wasn't keen on their other stuff but I can see why Dad likes this one given we'll all be missing him soon!

Sometimes I come home and the music is so loud I can't even hear myself thing. I told you his speakers are banging. I don't mind if it's Johnny Cash but I can't stand John Prine, which I had to listen to for two hours the other night. Still, I don't mind this one so much - it's kinda cute. Dad tells me it has to be loud as he's half deaf these days - I tell him I'm going to be half deaf forced to listen to Prine.

Some names I love on here, some I've yet to discover so thank you (and your Dad) for that. 💛

I think there's something really special about being able to share like that. A show or books or music. A way to see into the other person's soul. I'm glad you have that cause not all kids do with their parents.

It strikes me I'm a lot like my folks. I appreciate art, music, literature - just as they do. I don't box myself into one genre, just like they've always changed with times and listened to different things. I've been very lucky to be raised like that. I don't feel a massive generational gap.

Country music of USA we never heard many except those who made it big enough to our radio, Johnny Cash, Canned Heat, Bill Wyman, names I recognize. Great to get into older music my sons also enjoy the era.

Hey @riverflows It sounds great that you've found a nice balance with your current work situation. It's great that you're feeling valued and supported in your job, and that you have such a lovely way to unwind with your Dad in the evenings. Great selections by the way!

Had forgotten completely about "Missing You". Loved Little Feat, especially the Dixie Chicken style of loud and electric. That's a sweet choice.

Always liked the humor of Prine's work, with perhaps "Daddy won't you take me back to muhlenberg county" being an exception. Guess a hole in daddy's arm is not too humerous either come to think of it. 

It bothered me so much of him singing the female persona in "Angel of Montgomery" that his words were reworked a bit on my <A HREF="https://hive.blog/music/@novacadian/angel-of-mongomery-cover">cover</A> of it. That's not too humorous either.  🙄
