Sneaky Route past Bogong Avalanche and Quick Stop at Clover Arboretum

Clover Arboretum fells like a secret garden because it's so out of the way and easy to miss, driving past in a rush to get to Falls Creek  off the Bogong High Plains Road that winds its way up the mountain. Currently, it's not accessible from Falls Creek because of the landslide that happened last year. We managed to sneak through on a pass where we lied and said we were residents, but to do otherwise meant a six hour detour to where we needed to be. Besides, it was only a small lie - we were living on the mountain for a day in the Defender, after all. 

The avalanche has stopped traffic going to Falls for some time, which is a big concern with the ski season coming up. At least they'd managed to clear a single lane access road for trucks, deliveries and residents - and the occasional traveller like us who'd been told about the pass. Honestly we were so grateful not to backtrack the long and winding road back to Omeo and then onward to Bright, our destination. And it was fun taking this road as well, a really beautiful one winding down the mountain and then onward to Mount Beauty.

On the road you'll easily see the arboretum on the right. It used to be a small village, used to house the workers that built the Clover Dam in the 1930's. It was relocated as it was said to be bad for their health, being so damp.

Now you know what damp is good for, right? Moss and lichens and mushrooms! Cover anything in moss and it takes on a Tolkeinesque, fairy like quality - a little bit of magic. The beautiful home made benches were covered with it. Not the best for dry bums, but I imagine in summer it'd be a shady delight.

I wondered who maintained the garden, as though some trees did have labels, many had fallen off or were worn and barely visible. Still, the trees were beautiful, whatever their name! The whole area is famous for being gorgeous in Autumn and the golds, reds and yellows of the deciduous leaves were just stunning. Truly the best time of year to visit is Autumn!

The trees were even reflected and mimicked in the moss.

Beautiful old steps and walls were softened with pillows of moss as well. This was truly my kind of garden.

What a wonderful place to visit!  It does look like you might run into Frodo Baggins there 🤣  I love trees.  I was delighted this week that a tree my son bought me for my birthday last year is leafing out!  It went into shock last year, dropped its leaves, and stayed dormant all summer.  I was about to give up on it but decided to wait and see if it came back this spring.  And boy did it 😁  looks vibrant right now.

What a breathtakingly beautiful area, that bench may not be the best to sit on at this time of year but it has a charm to it
