Sunday Tidy Up at the River Ranch
I wake up to baby rabbits. I can see them frolicking and cleaning their tiny noses from the bathroom window. I bang on the glass and they scatter. Today is Rabbit Frightening day. We're going to the bottom of the property to shout at the fluffy little effers. The usual viruses that keep the numbers under control aren't working - and despite the councils useless advice, we are not getting a rabbit proof fence because who can afford one??

As Jamie lights a fire, I start collapsing burrows. Tiny lizards and huge green bullants scatter. Dad tells me this is how they did it back in the day, his father digging until they got to the centre where the rabbits hid. They'd sell the meat and eat them. No one wants rabbits these days. They're fat on supermarket chickens.

There's a lot of fallen branches they use as cover - they fell down in the willy willy that came through here last year. I share a lot about the kitchen garden but there's a lot of our five acres to tend - we are right down the bottom at this point.

The fence line you see in the photo above leads all the way to below the house. We will pull it out one day and get the whole lower property slashed. We have never slashed it as we liked the view of grasslands where kits would come low for mice. But with this El Nina weather pattern we just have so many rabbits in there it has to be done. 

We pull a few posts out with the winch from the Landrover. It's the only vehicle that can get down here as it's been raining like hell.

In one direction theres a small lake and a forest. The frogs are silly loud. Looking to the other, I rant about the neighbours tyres. It's actually illegal to so this as they are a fire risk and hide rabbit warrens. We can't do anything though as we all have a silent agreement to let live and not dob each other into the council. I still might though.

There's a beautiful old river gum just over the broken fence (we have never repaired it as we don't have stock) which was voted one of Australia's most loved trees. @thebigsweed, we may not have maple or oak but this lovely deep red is a favourite here.

The wattles we planted in the 2021 long lockdown are growing fast. We have to keep the guards on so the rabbits don't nibble them.

Having a big property is hard work. There's always something that needs to be done. If the rabbits keep up their destruction we might give up on the whole thing, sell up and become nomads. 
 
Still, it's a good Sunday. We go visit my gorgeous grandbaby Ned and finally get to snuggle him. Cuter than a baby bunny.

Fun post showing more of your property.  Sent me googling to figure out some Aussie-isms.  I enjoy it, they spice up the language a bit.  I'm always curious whether its my limited vocabulary or a different Aussie turn of a phrase.  When I was in California, the early settlers planted eucalyptus to dry up swampy areas.  Now they are thriving and considered invasive.  We have minor rabbits problems nothing like Australia.  Just annoyingly nibble our flower beds.  Have a great Sunday 🙂
