THINGS THAT GET MY GOAT ABOUT TRAVELLING
I don't often like to rant online, but when I do, you can be sure I'm right royally *annoyed*. Usually, I'm fairly chilled, but there's many things that bug me about travelling, and all of them involve other people. It's no wonder I try my best to steer clear of them, and particularly *sorts* of people - and yes, you can usually tell. 

Take now, for instance, as I'm taking advantage of the reception before we enter the wild waters of the Bass Strait on the ferry between Tasmania and mainland Australia. It's busy, and granted, not easy to find a seat. I purposefully headed for the quiet reading room, which has SIGNS, goddammit, SIGNS, that say it's for people who like to quietly read. There's a family of six here - two parents, three kids, and a baby. I can live with the kids - they're quietly reading and colouring. And I can live with babies gurgles. I honestly don't mind children and I appreciate how hard it can be to travel with them.

But a muscial toy? Are you kidding me? I'm on this ferry *all day*. Does this baby not have OTHER toys? Why does it have to be a musical one? It's the most wildly irritating thing I can think of. 

So I went and said, politely, no offence, but this is meant to be a quiet area. Do you think you can tone it down on the musical instruments? She did *not* take it kindly. In fact, she was quite vicious towards me. *This* is why people don't complain to their neighbours and go straight to authorities. People can't take it on the chin. 

Perhaps it's just me with noise. I do try to mind my reactions because after all, I'm responsible for my own happiness. But I will never, ever understand how you can be quietly eating lunch watching the view and someone will park right next to you with the *engine running* and their conversation on *speaker phone*. 

Same with those lovely quiet camps you find, settling down to listen to the music of nature - the birds, the waves on the shore. Then some dickheads arrive, set up camp and start playing their music like we all appreciate latin fusion jazz or hard rock or doof as we enjoy the loveliness of nature. Just because *you* like *your* music, doesn't mean that everyone else does.

**A quiet camp some years ago**

I think what drives me wild is that people just don't seem to have a) any self awareness of their impact on others, and/or b) don't care that their behaviour has an impact on others. The second is clearly worse. 

I do understand that people have different ways of enjoying their holidays, and for some, it involves rocking up with a case of beer and putting on some tunes and having beers with mates into the wee hours of the morning, but to not think about how your noise affects others, well, that's a different story. 

Anyway, she finally found another spot for her family, not without spinning around to glare and tell me that I was discourteous and it's hard enough to travel with children without unhelpful people like me. I responded that sorry, I was polite about it, but the musical toy was too much, and that it wasn't her children I objected to, but the noise of the toy. Now *I'm* the bad guy, lol! 

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, as they say. But bottom line, be aware of your personal space - yours and your families - and think about how they might affect others. If you don't care, well, that says something about who you are as well. 

Anyway, the cosmic jokes on me - they have moved *just outside* the quiet reading area, so I can still hear that bloody musical toy. 

Time for the noise cancelling headphones.

Hello River

I totally get you. Do you wanna know what I find even more annoying? Extended family members that think buying those fucking musical toys is a good idea. They get smiles from me and then those fuckers get disappeared. Do you know why? Because I'm just like you. I can't stand that kind of noise. 

I've had a few camping trips that were royally screwed by the types  you have outlined in your post. Three cases of beer, a bottle of brandy and then tunes get turned up louder and louder. If you wanna jam like that, go to a fucking trance party, not to a communal campsite. It's just sheer selfishness and lack of respect for your fellow human. 

Don't worry, it wasn't just you today, it's just been one of those really shitty Mondays that want to annoy us. Sending you a hug.

Ah those people are difficult indeed. The ones who donโ€™t mind or respect their personal space when around others. I will admit that Iโ€™ve done it myself but I would like to think that Iโ€™ve gotten better and outgrown it! We are always scolding our son to tone it down, other people donโ€™t want to hear him yelling and all that. Doesnโ€™t work half the times but at least we try lol

I get totally annoyed at someone whoโ€™s got the nerve to smoke next to a crowd of people, particularly children. That fucking pisses me off! Youโ€™re choosing to inhale cancer bud, I donโ€™t and I especially donโ€™t want my kid to!

One of my friends gave me a small sqweeking (how in gods name do you write this) toy for the dog, and it was literally the most annoying sound in the world which ever existed. As so also the neighbors thought.

Kudos for you actually for mentioning this to them, but indeed the reaction is kind of what was expected since the world has absolutely no tolerance for critisism anymore it seems. Noisecancellers for the win!

No, it doesn't. And it was a reasonable request. I have been thinking all day about how having kids does not give you the automatic right or excuse to do what you want either. I have the right to my personal space as well and just because she decided to have three kids and travel doesn't mean her rights trump mine. I sound like an asshole though ahahahaha

Haha, I can relate so much to this. Usually I always book a seat in a quiet train car and usually the people there are quiet. But when I visited my mom for Easter there wasn't a quiet car on that train and I had to endure a 'normal' car. It was terrible ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Well, maybe it wasn't that bad, haha. I think I exaggerated a bit. I wouldn't say I'm hypersensitive. But usually I prefer a quiet car if there is one ๐Ÿ™‚ But you also can miss out on some interesting interactions so it's not only positive. I just appreciate that there is a choice.

I can totally relate and understand. I sometimes take the batteries out of certain toys, at my sister's place. I like quiet toys or music when I can handle it ;<)

Then again, when I was a teen, I don't think I was this aware nor did I care that much of what others thought was noisy ( although, in all honesty, I probably was more aware than most others teens ), so I guess it's also a sign of growing older ( sorry about that ). 

Suffice to say that I really appreciate silence and natural sounds, these days.

I lived in cities for 35 years and have experienced enough noise for a life time ( or probably several life times ).

where - right now - I hear the cicades and birds chirping outside of my window.
