After five long years, Mariana was finally at home and although her father hoped it would be forever, the girl had no intention of dedicating herself to the management of the corn plantation as her father had hoped. 

It had been enough having to study something she didn't want just to please him to be in charge of his business.  So the plan was to stay only a month and return to her routine. 

In all these years she had grown fond of the city and although the countryside would always be part of her, her future was not there.

She dreamed of making a successful career in the company that opened its doors to her despite her little experience and although she knew it had not been on her own merits, but for being the fiancée of the owner's son, she was determined to prove her worth. 

For the time being, she intended to enjoy the few days she had ahead of her before returning to her new position at the accounting firm. 

She went up to her room, changed her clothes and immediately ran to the stables in search of Malia... her mare. A jet-black thoroughbred, a gift from her father when she turned fifteen. 

He entered the stables in such a hurry that he didn't notice the bench a few steps from the door, stumbling to fall face first on the floor.

Don Jose could not have been more pleased by all the young man's dedication and saw in him and his daughter those who would take over the farm when he could no longer do so.

The hours passed quickly amidst anecdotes and laughter and by the time they realized it was about to get dark. They got up in a hurry and started back to the Casa Grande. 

Halfway back they saw a white horse approaching them at full speed.  It was Macario, the foreman.

*"Mira no más en la hermosa mujer que te has convertido mi niña"* 

*"Tu siempre tan salamera Nana Julia"* dijo Mariana abrazando nuevamente a la pequeña anciana de  rizos blancos que por diecisiete años cuidó de ella después del fallecimiento de su madre siendo apenas una bebé. 

Después de cinco largos años, Mariana por fin estaba en casa y aunque su padre esperaba que fuese para siempre, la chica no tenía ninguna intención de dedicarse a la administración de la plantación de maíz como su padre anhelaba. 

Ya había sido suficiente con tener que estudiar algo que no deseaba sólo para complacerlo como para quedarse ahora a cargo de sus negocios.  Así que el plan era estar sólo un mes y regresar a su rutina. 

En todos estos años le había tomado cariño a la ciudad y aunque el campo siempre sería parte de ella su futuro no estaba ahí.

Soñaba con hacerse de una carrera exitosa en la empresa que le abrió las puertas a pesar de su poca experiencia y aunque sabía que no había sido por méritos propios, sino por ser la prometida del hijo del dueño, estaba decidida a demostrar su valor. 

Por lo pronto pretendía disfrutar al máximo los pocos días que tenía por delante antes de regresar a ocupar su nuevo cargo en la firma de contadores. 

Subió a su habitación, se cambió de ropa y de inmediato corrió en dirección a las caballerizas en busca de Malia... su yegua.
Una pura sangre azabache regalo de su padre al cumplir los quince años. 

Entró tan de prisa a la caballeriza que no reparó en el banco que se encontraba  a pocos pasos de la puerta, tropezando para caer de bruces sobre el suelo.

Mariana aún  en el suelo levantó la mirada para encontrarse con la mano extendida de Javier quien sonreía de oreja a oreja. 

*"Tenías que ser tú"* dijo la jóven al tiempo que se dejaba abrazar por los fuertes brazos de Javier, quien la mantuvo junto a su pecho hasta que el galopar de un caballo acercándose los obligó a separarse.

*"De ingratos está lleno el mundo. Vienes a saludar a Javier antes que a tu querido padre"* dijo Don José con una amplia sonrisa mientras desmontaba su caballo para unirse en un fuerte abrazo con su querida Mariana.

*"¿Yo o el banco?"* bromeó Javier mientras caminaban hasta donde se encontraba Malia ya lista para cabalgar junto a su dueña. 

Mariana montó a Malia con tanta destreza que los cinco años de ausencia parecían no haber existido.  

*"Ensilla a Cimarron y acompañanos Javi"* pidió la jóven. Y a los pocos minutos los tres se encontraban cabalgando rumbo a la plantación como solían hacer de niños. 

Javier era el nieto menor de Nana Julia y el mejor amigo de Mariana. Se  había criado en la Casa Grande junto a ella y aunque Don José le ofreció la oportunidad de ir a la capital a estudiar con Mariana el jóven prefirió quedarse en el pueblo y estudiar veterinaria en la universidad local.

Don José no podía estar más complacido por toda la entrega del jóven y veía en él y en su hija  a quienes se encargarían de la finca cuando él ya no pudiese hacerlo más.  

Equivocadamente esperaba que Mariana y su futuro esposo tomaran las riendas de la administración y con la ayuda de Javier quedasen al frente de todo, pero los planes de Mariana no podían estar más alejados de los deseos de su padre y no esperó en hacérselo saber en esa primera cabalgata juntos después de tanto tiempo. 

Don José salió como alma que lleva el diablo en dirección a la Casa Grande luego de escuchar a su única hija negarse a tomar las riendas del negocio familiar. 

*"¿No podías dejar al viejo soñar un  poco?"* la reprochó Javier. 

*"¿Qué necesidad había de hacerlo enojar acabando de reencontrarse Mariana?"* 

*"¿Para qué darle largas al asunto?  Ya tengo mi vida hecha en otro lugar, precisamente gracias a él y no pienso regresar. Sabes perfectamente que no quería irme a la capital y el me obligó a hacerlo"*. 

*"¿Así que todo esto es un acto de rebeldía... un berrinche de niña malcriada?"*

*"Y ya deja de esa mala costumbre de querer ser la voz de mi conciencia y trata de alcanzarme"* dijo la jóvencita clavando las espuelas a Malia quien emprendió la carrera seguida muy de cerca por Cimarrón. 

Cuando ya hubo conseguido una buena ventaja dándose por ganadora desmontó  junto al lago cercano a la plantación. 

A los pocos minutos Cimarrón con su jinete a cuestas se encontraban con Mariana quien los esperaba de pie con una mirada de absoluta satisfacción. 

*"Cinco años sin montar y aún así no puedes vencerme"* rió. 

Se acostaron sobre la suave hierba mirando al cielo como solían hacer desde niños.

Las horas transcurrieron rápidamente entre anécdotas y risas y cuando se dieron cuenta ya estaba a punto de oscurecer. Se levantaron de prisa y emprendieron el regreso a la Casa Grande. 

A mitad del recorrido divisaron un caballo  blanco que  se acerca a ellos a toda velocidad.  Era Macario, el capataz. 

*"Niña Mariana, Don José ha sufrido un infarto, pero no se preocupe, todo está bajo control. En éstos momentos el Doctor Balbino va con el hasta la clínica"*.

La angustia se reflejó en los ojos de Mariana. 

*"Todo  ésto es mi culpa. Si le sucede algo a mi padre no me lo perdonaré jamás"* dijo golpeando con la fusta a Malia para partir a todo galope hacia la Casa Grande.
