The history of the struggles for political power in Latin America is harshly marked by pain and misfortune, one of the countries that has suffered the most from the internal wars between the guerrillas and drug trafficking is Colombia.

I remember that in the eighties many Colombian immigrants came to my neighborhood, they were very hard-working and humble people who were quickly accepted in the neighborhood, there I made many Colombian friends, they even taught me to play soccer, sometimes they talked about why they had migrated to Venezuela and the stories they told me were heartbreaking. Now Venezuelans are who emigrate to Colombia.

But at that time, Colombia also had another war with people who were neither guerrillas nor drug traffickers, they were intellectuals and researchers who, because they had different political ideas from those in government power, were persecuted, slandered, and even assassinated.

This novel by Hector Abad Faciolince is a personal testimony of what living at that time in Colombia meant, a time in which freedom of thought was a danger to groups and social classes that had the power of a country that was bleeding everywhere. I am not knowledgeable in political matters, not at all, but this novel shows us what certain people, groups, and institutions can reach, even those that we believe are sacred and untouchable.

When I was looking for digital books on the internet, I came across "El olvido que seremos" (Forgotten We'll Be would be a more accurate translation, but when the book was sold in the USA, the title was adapted as Oblivion: A Memoir), the title caught my attention because I know that this is the title of a poem by Jorge Luis Borges, then I saw the name of the author about whom I had only read some articles that I found them excellent, so I immediately put the book down and started reading it. I read the novel in digital format, in ePub format from Titivillus publishing house, 2005, which I downloaded from the web and passed it on to my kindle.

Since I read the first words I was hooked, I was completely captivated and I could not stop reading it, so I read it in one day, each paragraph that ended filled me with suspense and eager curiosity to know what was coming. This testimonial novel is the best I have read in my life of this genre, perhaps even better than one by a Venezuelan writer who I thought was second to none.

Oblivion: A Memoir shows us the harsh reality of what the struggle for power is above all else, with this work the author strips himself completely naked, showing with his very elegant writing everything that he lived as a child to a teenager in those turbulent years and openly shows the deep love he felt for his father, who was a renowned doctor and university professor who fought hard to try to improve Colombian public health.

Abad manages to immerse us in the life of his father and himself living the socio-political problems of Colombia in the eighties, it is a heartbreaking story that deeply moved me.

I recommend reading this masterpiece by Hector Abad, in fact, I found out today that a film was made based on this work, which I plan to watch. This book is the testimony of something that is also happening now in my country, where there are also other Hector Abad, both father, and children who suffer the excesses and cruelty of those who have the power of a country, one that is also bleeding, suffering and mourning the death of so many people.

To finish, I would like to extract just a part of a quote from a poem by Francisco Quevedo and a reflection made by the author of this great work:

***«Yesterday has gone; tomorrow has not arrived. Today is going away without stopping for a moment, I am a “was”, and a “will be” and a tired “is.” [...]»*** Quevedo said when referring to the transience of our existence, always ineluctably directed towards that moment when we will cease to be.
