How to Answer the Question "Should I be a witness?"

I was looking into starting a witness node and was curious about the voting power of my followers. So, I wrote a little python script to do the math for me. Here it is for those interested.

<h2> Step 1</h2>
First make sure you have Steem-Python installed and Python 3.X

<h2>Step 2</h2>
Open up your favorite text editor and write the following:

Run the python code.

<h2>Step 4</h2>
Compare the output (it is in million vests) to https://steemd.com/witnesses.

<h4>I got 15,000mv so I could be top 50 if all my followers voted me for witness :)</h4>

What is the cost of becoming a witness? What is the expected reward? Perhaps you´ll be using existing equipment. Still, using it for this new purpose will necessarily have some sort of negative effect on the overall preformance of the equipment.

Just a thought. I am assuming you are considering this as a business, not as a hobby for which you pay.

I'd qualify my interest more as a self-sustaining hobby :)

I'm not looking to really profit, but I am looking at not losing a whole bunch of money at the same time. Hope that makes sense.

Cost of witness is about $45 per month using the service most witnesses here do. The reward, well I am not really sure. I know top 20 witnesses make $300-$600 a month, but that is not my goal.

Does not look economically interesting. If you can give it a try and leave after you are satisfied, then fine. A usd 45 a month cost will not kill you, most likely. But if you get hooked by responsibilies, or if the job carries liabilities or responsabilities, I would advice you not to do it.

BTW, I´m an oldtimer and an accountant. That´s why I am inclined to giving unsolicited advice.

Doesn't this post answer the question "Could I compete as a witness". Shouldn't the *should* imply an answer to more of a why question instead of a feasability/competitiveness type of question. Of course, one should also care if they have the technical knowledge to run a proper witness node I guess.

What would your answer of the "real" should question be?

I guess technically speaking. However I meant more of a should I spend $X a month to try to be a witness, implying a sort of is this worth it, should I spend the money.
