Long term food supplies on-hand will also help if you're not able to leave your location, due to sickness or severe weather. 

If you are on medications, too, you'll need to consider how obtain a sufficient or alternate source /method to maintain a steady supply. This is massively difficult here. We're lucky to get a 3 month supply in advance, plus you have to worry about effective dates. At the least, have a beefy first aid kit assembled.

Thanks, @robmc! I'm not a prepper per se, but we get enough severe weather here in Chicagoland that it pays to think ahead. (Am thinking of that massive, lengthy ice storm a few year ago.) My hubby is diabetic, so that's something that requires ongoing stability. Thankfully, he's not insulin dependent, but folks who are could have problems. 

Like the food stuffs, lots of the medical aid items can be obtained over time. Its the meds, though, that need an action plan and it's a toughie. Better to start sooner that later...   LOL!
